has anyone had a roof rack setup where they stored 4 studded snow tires on the roof? or a combo of roof and hitch ?

any ideas?

I'm planning a 10 day road trip in the pacific north west and I want to have studded snow tires as a "just in case"

Let me see what you have.

You can stand 4 wheels up in the cargo area no problem. But any large enough flat rack, and i supposed basket as well would work.

Take chains if you're that worried.

Probably this. Admittedly, I have 0 knowledge of the roads and weather in the PNW, but I have to imagine any benefit of a studded tire is going to be far outweighed by the drawbacks of carrying an entire additional set of tires. That much mass on the roof is going to kill handling, aero, fuel mileage, not to mention be a bitch getting on and off.

Just put your snow tires on if you're worried about it. Why would you not use them if you have them? It's only a ten day trip.

I live in the PNW and drive the mountain passes in the winter. You don’t need studded tires. Regular “3-peak” winter tires are fine, Blizzaks or similar are better, and you can keep a set of chains in the car to satisfy the State Patrol.
