I believe the issue until now was lack of off-the-shelf adapters for this kind of swap. When I walked into Iron Pig last weekend to pick up my truck from a vortec swap, I noticed a peculiar drivetrain sitting in front of a 40. Sure enough it was a 4.7 mated to an H55F. I inquired who was selling the lovely belhousing adapter in between. I belive they said the truck owner works for Lexus/Toyota and had the belhousing custom built by an Aussie shop(?). Apparently the truck owner is hoping to have more made to sell afterwards? I'll try to remember to post a pic up of it as I took a shot with my camera.
Maybe give them a call if you're pretty serious about the swap? I'll try to find the pic for ya...looked pretty with an all Jap drivetrain :)

Here's the picture(s). My wife took them while I was dealing with my truck, so she didn't get a good shot of the belhousing.

I walked by it a few feet, stopped, and slowly walked backwards until I was right beside it :). Said, "that what I think it is?"

The motor is originally a Lexus (don't know what differences there might be between it and my Tundra 4.7L).
If someone starts producing belhousings as I was told, then the leftover hard part is working out the electronics and mounting.

I did talk to the guys at IPOR about it, and they said they still recommend the Vortec swap for v8s into cruisers. There reasoning was availability of parts and the fact that you can get more power with aftermarket add-ons from the SBC that make it much more versatile. And you don't gain much mpg-wise by keeping a 4.7. I asked about longevity and they said a good vortec (especially the crate motors) will outlast a 60-series body anyway :).

why not lexus ls400 4.0 v8 ?
less electronics!

Not enough torque down low in my opinion. I used to have a LS400 and while it was very reliable and supposed to be a super tough motor it always seemed underpowered to me, even in the car.

two biggest factors I know... cost in $$ and drivetrain parts/adapters. I think slee had swapped one over into an 80 (Check out their web site).

I'm in the middle of a 4.0 transplant now. The adapter is being custom built using a v8 ballhousing in front of an a440 bellhousing so I can leave my trans and t case in the stock location. There are other ways to do it such as using an 80 series trans and transfer but that wasn't what I wanted. All things are possible with money. and that is the reason this isn't a common swap.

I've always wondered what's the easiest motor to swap in a 60/62? I come from the BMW world and there are a few motors we can swap between our cars that are relatively plug n play but from what I've read here there isn't much like that for these cars.....

Well, sure, you can swap in the OHC straight- six from the Pontiac Firebird from the '60's- that should
be ALMOST bolt in and keeps the engine configuration dead stock!

This would be a cool swap IMO. We have an 05' 4R with the 4.7 V8 and its a great engine. Curious to see what you do!
