A mudder should be immediately banned if they create a thread comparing a 4 runner to ANY Land Cruiser especially a 100 series. I mean isn't that one subject that is really really obvious to planet earth?

Now that this is brought back from the dead, I'll give y'all an update. I ended up buying an 02 4runner 4x4 SR5 SportEdition with 235k. I was planning on getting one with closer to 150k, but they were few and far between, and this on was in better shape at almost 240k than most that I saw that were 100k less. I've since done a bit. 265/75/16 General Grabber AT2s on Level 8 mkii wheels, B&M tranny cooler, Midland CB w/ Firestik, 2in lift (Bilstein Tundra 5100s all around w/ Tundra TRD springs up front and OME 906s on the rear), and piecing together a new stereo. New LBJ and OTREs are coming weekend after next. I'm very happy with everything. The only thing so far is with as little offroading as I actually do, I wish I would have gone with a C or maybe D rated tire to get some better MPGs on my daily driving.

You've got me jealous.

I had a 3rd Gen 4 runner, traded for a massive Ford F150, hated that and then went to a Subaru which I hated more. The one thing I didn't like about the FunRunner was that it could get cramped. But man, tooling around the woods in North Carolina in that thing was awesome.

I have owned a 1994 Surf (Japanese import 4Runner with better spec) with the 3.0 liter turbo diesel.
I loved it, but after driving the LX470 I know I have made the right choice.
So much more comfortable. A few weeks ago I drove my mates Surf and going up a sand dune it was bouncy and rough. In my LX it was comfy and smooth.

Got a 97 runner and 00 LC best of both worlds :)

I was curious if anyone has any new thoughts on this subject. We have owned a 98 limited 4runner for about a dozen years. I have no problem saying it has been the best vehicle I have ever owned. It left us stranded one time and I had months of warning on that (ignition switch). I also have not owned all that many vehicles but the main stays all have been in the family for over a decade. It takes me a while to trust a vehicle, so as it turns out I don't swap often. I am kind of wondering if the correct answer is a 4runner (local trail rig) and a nicer 4x4 for trips out west and towing. I want to get this right the first time 100 series, 200 series or maybe a gx460.

The 100, 200 or GX460 have V8s on them so these platforms are a plus on the towing side. The only advantage of a stock 4Runner V6 to the 100 or 200 or the GX460 is its fuel consumption. However, if you outfit the 4R V6 with all the armors, 33” tires, RTT, etc, it’s almost the same fuel consumption with the land cruiser but with the HP and torque of a V6. It basically boils down if you can make peace with the idea of a 11-14MPG daily rig but have the torque and power all the time of a V8. Size wise both interior and exterior, the 100 and 200 have similar specs. The GX460 is a tad close to the 4R in terms of roominess, although its interior is indeed luxurious compared to the 4R.

Buy the tr4. I have a LC. Just spent $3k for a leaky radiator, water pump, timing belt and throttle body. The LC is not cheap to maintain.

I've had a fully built 3rd gen 4runner before. If drives more like a truck imo after all the years I've owned it. Reliable like all the toyota SUV's, It also lacked interior space, and 3VZ V6 felt underpowered. I juggled around supercharging it, but the cost wasn't worth it. My wife's passenger car also had the same interior space.

The 100 has a more comfortable feel, even with suspension. I think its because of the IFS/ torsion system. Safety and front visibility is awesome. Interior space sold me as well. V8 power is a no brainer. When the wife likes driving it, you know its the one.. Its a land cruiser!

We have a 4G V8 4runner and a 100. The 4 runner is cheaper to run. The 100 is a nicer place to be. We had a 3G 4 runner for years before that, and while there are many things I prefer about it to the 4G it was severely lacking in power comparatively.

Land cruisers are reliable, maintenance and repairs are not cheap.

Well I currently own both and need to sell one of them or my 95 Bronco. I've pretty much ruled out the Bronco since it's built and somewhat reliable and a convertible.

I love the size of the 4runner but also hate the size. It's almost sporty with the Bilsteins/OME medium combo and 265-75-16's but slow at the same time. 218k miles and I've put almost zero $$ in repairs and maintenance in the last year.

Love the size and hate the size of my 2006 Hundy. I have a family of 5 with a large Lab too so we end up in my wife's 2012 Denali XL most times on the weekendS and it's just me tooling around in the cruiser during the week. But the power and ride and comfort is very good for what it is. I've also had to put a new steering rack in it, cv axles, diff bushings etc etc that is not CHEAP!

Probably keeping the cruiser just because it's more comfortable but it broke my heart when I sold my last modified 3rd gen 15 years ago and will break my heart again when I sell this one!
