Outside of the H55F and A440 what other transmissions are available to put in my 89 FJ62 without too much headache? I took a road trip this past weekend and found that my A440 now shifts like garbage.

Is it adjusted right? Is the fluid fresh? Is the filter clean? Do you have an aux. cooler? My A440 shifts better than my dads newer Chevy and he has a "shift kit". I'd love a 5 speed, but this transmission is fine.

Just concerned with the A440 horror stories I've searched and read. If anything I'll change the fluids and filter for now, but am looking ahead for a "newer" trans to pop in.
Tonkota makes some good points. Years ago, my A440 shifted slow and sluggish. After I serviced the unit (fluid and filter) it was like a new trany and haven’t had a problem since…

After a little search I'll do a Rodney Flush and clean the filter. I did pull the stick and the ATF is a little on the funky side. I'll post up after I'm done.

Tighten up the kick down cable after you change the fluid and filter. That will make a huge difference in the way it shifts. If your A440 takes a dump you could opt for an extreme build from Rodney, or go the 5 speed route. I think those are your good options, manual or automatic. I don't know of a SMG that will work well in the Land Cruiser 
after a kick down cable adjustment, my cruiser drives much much better... It even feels like it has more power but thats due to being in the right gear...

Flush it befor you change the filter the old filter will catch the deposits caused by the flush and the new fluid then drive it a week or so and then change your filter.

Ok folks sorry for the late update but I have to say...You all certainly rock!
We finally had a break in the weather and I was able to finally get under my 62 and do some of your suggestions. I read through various threads on the 3FE mailing list and followed their great instructions as well. I did the Governor Party Trick and then Rodney flushed the trans. I went through 3 gallons of ATF by the time all was said and done. It really didn't make a difference until I adjusted the throttle and kick-down cables. It feels like the 3FE finally woke up! I felt so good I gave it a basic tune up and now I can honestly say I love this big arsed truck!
A big thanks to all of you for your suggestions! You certainly make coming here worthwhile!
