I know this thread could go in either forum, but I thought I would try here. Just acquired (free!!!) a 76 FJ55. Pretty much rust free, but missing half the motor. PO decided to have the head redone, and while in it, got new pistons, cams, the works. I guess the machine shop that milled the head forgot to clean out all the excess metal, and when the PO put the head on the motor, and got it fired up, those metal bits pretty much ate the motor up. That and he dropped a couple pistons on the ground when he pulled it all apart.
That said, he is sick of the thing and was going to take it to a junk yard. I stepped in and said...uh....no way, Ill take it.
I have access to a 3FE pulled from a 90 FJ62 that is complete, but the tranny is bad....tcase is good. How hard would it be to drop this engine, with the 55 tcase and tranny in? Anyone ever mated a 3FE to an older moldel tcase and tranny? I also have a tcase and tranny from an 83 FJ60 I have in the garage that I am parting out. What would my best combination be?
Plans for the 55 are this motor swap and a possible spring over. I figure for a free car, have some fun with it.
Let me know what you all think

Thanks,
Russ

If possible, use the FJ60 transmission, and the FJ62 split case. Don't know if the 4 speed will bolt fight up to the 3FE, but it's probably close.

I think there was a thread about putting an H55F 5 speed (same as the 4 speed, but longer) behind a 3FE, and someone has done it.

Can't help with the question, but what a deal. I wish someone would give me a FJ55 for free. Congrats and good luck.

It's all possible. You are going to need the computer and wiring harness from the FJ62. You will need the tranny, t-case from the FJ60. The tranny/tcase will bolt right up. The tcase from the FJ55 will not bolt up to the 4 speed from the FJ60. The motor it'self should just drop in as well. There is not a whole lot of differance between the 2f/3f. Block is shorter, and of course it's got the FI stuff.

This sounds like it's a great drivetrain swap for your piggy. Oink!

Good luck.

What a deal - the 4-speed will bolt right up to a 3FE...but you'll have to use the split case as mentioned (no big deal since you've got one handy!). Should be an easy swap - the only snag might be the FI...

Be sure and post pics -

or take the 3FE, strip all the EFI stuff off, call up SOR and have then send you the carb, manifold, dizzy ect ect ect and make it a 3F with carb and no smog, that way no computer or anything, just a 3F

there should be a thread on the 80 forum. I want to put an h42 into an FJ 80 (3F). I may do that this winter if I save my pennies!
