What is the proper tension bolt adjustment nut. This one looks home made and does not mate flush to the back side of the alternator / nut does not tension down flush either. Also a 10mm bolt with 12mm head will not pass through the hole in the tensioner nut. The alternator was clamped through the tension nut with junk 1/4-20 SAE hardware.

For reference (Not my Picture) ~ This is the bolt ~ Top of Alternator. I can almost see the tensioner nut.

Danimal's PICTURE in his thread on swapping a 3FE alternator into a 2F air pump positions might just shed a little light on the subject. What is this crazy looking necked down Alternator tension bolt? Looks like a Toyota 1-off part or someone got busy with a bench grinder.

Is this weird bolt my missing piece?

Not to be a smart Alec... Have you looked at the FSM? From what I remember that's what mine looks like. I had to replace my alternator within a year of owning my Beast. And it doesn't mate flush from what I remember as well.

Huge thanks to OUPUT SHAFT the bolt with the arrow is the missing piece.

My Gettofabulous rendition ~ Used the nut to turn it evenly on the grinder and chase the threads. It is a little shorter than 'd like but it works.

Even once I fabricate the new bolt IT DOES NOT FIT!

As it turns out ~ The water pump bypass hose clamp was turned with the screw clamp on the bottom of the hose. This screw clamp bottomed out between the hose and alternator adjustment arm bracket. This downward force when reassembling from a water pump install and tightening up the block mount for the alternator adjustment bracket forced the alternator adjustment arm down 1/4" too far (seriously impeding this bolts alignment and installation) . This is prob why the PO tossed the original and used a smaller 1/4-20 bolt.

The only way I see for this mistake to occur is to install the hose and clamp before the 2-piece alternator bracket assy (Block location casting bracket and adjustment arm plate assy).

The FIX: Turn the hose clamp ~ Loosen the bolts and nstall everything loosely and then retighten to spec bringing the pieces into proper alignment.

That does look a tad on the "barely fits" side. Toyota (I'm guessing) made that tapered positioning bolt long so that there would be no possible chance that the funky nut could slip free of it.

If the funky nut were to slip free, the alternator could conceivably move, the belt loosen, the belt be torn off the engine, and ensuing mayhem develop.

Maybe in the future get a longer bolt and whittle it down as you've done....for piece of mind.

Thank and I agree ~ This is a fresh buy (Not Running). I am adding the missing bolt to my OEM parts wish list.

I'll be hunting for fresh kill ~ 3FE engine oil dip stick, Radiator mount (Rubber isolator), Fuse box cover, This weird bolt . . . I'm sure the list will continue to grow.

Interesting, you have the internal fan alternator, I think most have the external fan version, like the one below.

can anyone tell me the size of this bolt missing in this picture, but shown above in Post #3 (the long one that is the tensioner)? M8? What length? Mine went on walkabout. I figure I could weld a tab to a barrel nut and find a bolt?
