Plumbing from the filter to the pump was not a problem. I just used factory flare fittings on 5/16" brake line. Simple, clean, looks factory.

Making slow progress, got the interior & transmission hump pulled earlier this week. Belly pan, driveshafts and xfer case linkage removed last night, just leaving exhaust and throttle linkage. Got a crew coming over Saturday morning to help pull the driveline, plan is to get it on a crate and separated ;)

In fact, I was just in Austin last month and went to Live Oak and down to Uncle Billy's after some recommendations on the yahoo 3fe board. Live Oak had a heavy beer that was.... well... different. I really liked the porter at Billys.

Hey, was that you that I gave all the Austin pub suggestions on the 3FE list--Draught House, Billy's, Flying Saucer?

Glad to hear that you enjoyed some of our fine local brews. Lots of them to be found around here, fortunately for us.

Yep, that was me. Thanks for the advice, and sorry I missed you.

At last count, I think you have four 3FE 40's in Austin. In KC we have two that I know of, TornadoAlleyCruiser is working on one, and mine. We have good beer here too. If any of ya' all head this way, let me know.

Yep, that was the crack WALCS A-Team. I've never seen a more impressive group of professionals. Too bad no one thought to take action photos. :D

Awesome Project Tucker. I Will be tackling something like this hopefully within the year, but I will be taking a 79 FJ40 and putting in an 1FZJ engine with a manual 5 speed tranny. Will setup a thread when i begin my restoration.

Still going ...

Spent the weekend doing the more mundane and less fun parts of the project, removing, degreasing, stripping, and painting. Got the bell housing and clutch pulled from the 2F yesterday, threw that and the motor mounts in the parts washer over night. Also started some electrolytic rust removal with my ghetto setup:

Parts come out bare metal, a little scrubbing, hang to dry, and shoot with paint. Here's some of clean stuff:

Spent most of today removing 33 years of dirt and grime from my transmission and tcase, not done yet but looking better. Bolted on my new one-piece saver from Georg:

Nothing real fun to take pictures of, but steady progress keeps the project on track ;) Going to be cleaning up the frame rails and firewall next weekend, should be ready to drop the 3FE in its new home in a few weeks :bounce:

you got any 'before' pictures of rusty stuff.. I have always wanted to try the electrolysis

Tucker,

more info on the voltage and how you do the electrolisis.....

Midstream the thread stopped - leaving us all (who don't live in Austin) wondering what progress has been made :)

Any thread updates??

I'm about to pull my 2F out of my 40 this weekend....and need your guidance!

Thanks for paving the way-

Jeff in Denver

Sorry for the lack of updates, my wife is due any day so there hasn't been a lot of progress the last couple of months ;) Since we were supposed to have the baby last Friday and the little guy is reluctant to come out, I did get to work on the 40 over the long weekend.

I got the frame cleaned up and painted back to the firewall, it was a real PITA due to the '70 undercoating crap you've got to chisel off :frown: After getting all that off I ground it the best I could with a 3M paint & rust removal disk and then soda blasted it. Here's what it looks like after a coat of primer and rust-tough enamel:

If you look back at the pics when we were pulling the engine you can see it was quite a bit of work to get it looking like this ;) Next I put my transfer case back together with new gaskets, and installed the xfer-case saver I got from Georg. I had also machined the speed-o gear housing and installed double seals ~Mudrak method.

Next I spent some time trimming down a DS floor pan I had picked up so it can be welded in, will be going to Edwin at LCS this week to get that done (wish I had a freaking welder). I also chopped down a SOR 8274 bumper I had acquired to 38" and tapered the ends while I had the chop-saw out. Will be stripping and painting it at some point, I've also got an 8274 needing re-built in the garage that will be bolted up to it.

Hope to get the engine and transmission bolted back together while the truck is at the shop, so I can get the driveline installed when she comes home ;)

Baby is still due any day, so progress may be spotty ... stay tuned!

Tucker

Towed the 40 down to Land Cruiser Specialists yesterday evening, got some funny looks steering it with no front clip while sitting on a cooler behind my buddies '77 40 ;) Should get it back in a week or so and start posting some progress on the install, timing was just right to do the floor pan while the driveline was out -

Tucker

BTW: LCS is about 8 blocks from my house -

Didn't know Edwin was still doing that stuff.. I gotta get back down to texas..
