Anyone out there with 3fe 80 series running 5:29 gears and 35" tires, I have 33" with 456 now, gonna go up to 35" and might want more gear than 488's. I think with the 35"s and 529's my highway RPM's would be a little better for power, Im not worried about gas mileage, I gave upon that a long time ago:crybaby: .

488 is plenty.

Thanks Killer

Go for it, 4.88s are the best match for 32-33s, 4.56s are best for 31s, 5.29s would be great on 35s. Let the 3FE have any chance it can at being a streetable motor.

I'm running 4:88's with 32's, and they are perfect.

A 35 inch tire is about 12% taller than a 31. 5.29s are 29% steeper than 4.10s.

Lock your rig out of OD and see how you like it on the highway. That's what running 5.29s will be like when you are IN OD.

IMHO not a good choice unless the rig is a pure trail rig. An 80 on 35s probably isn't?

35" tires with OD off runs about 2,900 RPM at 70 mph on my '95 (1ZFE). Personally, I don't run a rig with 35" MT's any faster than that, so if I regear it will absolutely be 5.29 on 35's as that also opens the door for 37's one day.

I also live at 7,400 ft. elevation and drive regularly to 12,000 ft. I have no need for high speed cruising in this rig, that's what my minivan is for that gets 26 mpg at 80 mph and carries my house inside too :D

The FZJ 80 that is a project rig for 4WD Toyota Owner Mag that is what they just put in and it seems they are happy.

This is also what I'm thinking...

Update to my rig, I just recently went to 35"s and I am ready to make the decision. My last post on this was over a year ago. Just want to check if anyone else has gone 5.29s with a 3FE and 35"s or even anyone else. The truck is my daily driver now and I put about 8-10k a year on it. I take it to the Outerbanks(bout 260 miles) about 3 times a year, so that it is the only major highway cruising my truck does. So any input will be greatly appreciated. Oh and right now it has 4.56's.

Thanks

After 3500 miles with the 5.29s and 35's I would totally do it all over again. The only thing I would do different would be to set up the gears myself the first time instead of paying someone to do it, then having to pull the front out 2 more times to have the installer set them up again. As of tonight it is out a 3rd time and I am doing it this weekend. on a positive side note I can now remove the front diff and reinstall the hubs to make it driveable in under 1 hour. rant off.

Got 5.29s, run 35s on the street.....love it everywhere but the interstate, but that's because I'm running pipes instead of cats and a single glasspack. Crawl is great, town economy increased a whole bunch, feels like a whole new beast. Got about 5k miles on the gears, 90%+ with 35s....4.88s would be a waste of time.

I will disagree with motorsarge, pay someone to do it. Just find out before hand if they know what they are doing. I payed $400 to drop off my 3rds and gears/install kits then picked them up the next day, including proper grinding to get the rear diff's center pin to fit (inform the installer of this and ask them to do the grinding!). ~$500 is average for gear setup. And unless you already have all the instruments and plenty of time, you don't want to mess with setting up gears.

5.29 & 35's with 3fe will run fine. If you were to change from 4.56 to 4.88 you would hardly notice a change.

I've been running my 5.29's and 35's for almost a year now. Don't think I've had it on the highway yet! Speedo is way outta wack and have no idea what kinda RPM's im spinning. But definitely no regrets.

I went the DIY route. Had never set up a R&P before. Ended up buying a few special tools and reading everything I could on the subject. First time was a charm... 5.29's and ARB's installed. Been wheeling the heck out of it since then with a big :) on my face!
