Hi Folks! So as some of you may have noted I have 77 BJ40 with a 3B motor in it. The previous owner swears up and down that the motor is a 1992 "Mitsubishi" motor. I know that Hino built the 3B for tons of vehicles for many different companies but what I would like to do is somehow identify weather 1992 is the correct year. Does anyone know how to ID them with engine codes, specs, or visuals?

I am asking for a few reasons, but the most immediate is that I am trying to locate the proper starter for this motor. The thing is a beast to get started in the morning, but my battery registers as good but the thing is cranking like the battery is about to die, and the starter occasionally just "clicks" rather than spinning. So I want to actually install a dual battery setup and replace (part of the?) starter. Does anyone have a good vendor for the starter (parts?) I need?

Thanks everyone!

On the motor near the rear upper corner of the block you will see cast in the block "3B" if it is in fact a 3B. If I remember right it's on the left hand side of the block. To id age you would need the serial number and a chart showing the date range for that serial number.

Maybe he is confusing Daihatsu with Mitsubishi. Daihatsu used the 3B and other B engines in their range of Delta trucks for many years

Starters are not year specific my 81 & 82-2B share the same starter as my 83-3B and IIR also same as the earlier B the part number may come up different but usually cross over on different years.
If your starter is acting up I would take it in have it overhauled it is way cheaper than trying to source out a new starter and a used one may be just as unreliable.

Starters are year specific. When the 3B went to the alloy bellhousing in 85 or so the starter and rear engine plate changed. Pre/Post 85 will not interchange.

Edit. You can get away with either starter if you have the correct bellhousing.

I would guess 1978 to 1984 BJ4# cruisers have interchangeable starters. (B, 2B and 3B engines)

My 2c

But how about some pics of this engine so we can see if it is Mitsubishi or Toyota?

How are you checking your battery? You may have 12vdc but not have the cranking amps. Are you sure you don't have a bad alternator and or battery? I struggled with a similar problem that was solved w/ 2 optima red tops and a toyota alt.

I am talking 40 series engine which ended production in 84 I guess I need to be more specific to avoid confusion.

Considering the original poster doesnt seem to be too sure about what he has

"The previous owner swears up and down that the motor is a 1992 "Mitsubishi" motor. I thought it would be useful to point out that they are not the same. 3B was actually in use into the 90's so who knows what year it is. A picture might be helpful.

The good news is that the internals and motor are interchangeable between the 3B's and most other HD toyota diesels.

Looking at the posters location I would guess it is safe to say the 3B could come from many of the different vehicles that were equipted with the 3B,I tend to asume 3Bs in north america come either from a 42 or a 60 but when they are south of the US then the possibilities are unlimited.
Yes the 3B was produced for other applications beyond 84 but did end in 84 for the 40 series and 87 on the 60 they even installed them to run refer units on cargo containers somewhere out there there may be hundreds of 3Bs wasting away in some container yard.
Some pics of the engine can help ....Bell housing ,starter motor, casting numbers is there a 3B stamped on the engine,

Starter Contacts are an EZ repair. and ez to figure !!!!

Do a Volt drop test , DVM (volt meter) from the battery starter lug to the other side of the starter motor feed after the starter solenoid ..When it cranks dead , whats your reading ?? mine frigged / clicking was 12 V , after removing and installing 10.00 worth of contacts ,, 1.8 to 2.6 volts , Diesel prevented to start for testing / cranking tests.

Just cleaned the moving starter contact.. (it's on contact that always wears)
