So I am doing a fame swap on my 85 Bj60 replacing my rotted frame with a nice rust free one ;)

While the frame is out and the motor is nice and easily accessible I want to do some maintenance. Here is my plan:

1. Water pump
2. Diaphragm replacement
3. Rear main seal
4. Valve clearances new valve cover gasket
5. Inspect clutch, replace if necessary
6. transfer case rebuild/ modify from vacuum to manual shift
7. Test injectors
8. new motor mounts

Some info: the 3b runs great, has 300k kms, and has been turbo'd for about 15000km @ 7lbs, but I am also swaping turbos for a mercedes unit for about 14lbs boost. It has a 1 year old 4core rad and new hoses.

What else should I address while I am in there? I plan on driving this truck for a long time.

A new thermostat.. Perhaps a new bosch primer pump. Hoses from primerpump to fuelfilter. Glowplugs.

I don't know if injection timing would be worth checking.....

If it were me, I'd replace every rubber hose in sight.

I'd consider valve seals while your at it. More work than you probably wanted to do but with 300,000 on the clock on an older rig your probably going to be needing to do them sooner rather than later. I have a 2b with half that mileage and I go thru a decent amount of oil because mine are leaky. Every time I start it up there is that tell tale sign of whitish smoke- and lots of it.

Primer pump is a good one as well as the diaphragm. If the clutch components are original then just do it- and the pilot bearing/ rear main.

Any oil leaks? Now is the time to get those taken care of.

Sir, Peter.:""whitish smoke"" is to me , Incomplete combustion in start up due to Glows / Preheat have poor performance , or just low / worn out compression, without consuming any glycol/antifreeze/coolant [DIESEL world].

Valve stem seals when they leak real bad , and IF you can tell the difference between rings on a Diesel or seals .Gas engines have a throttle plate that when closed at idle or deceleration down cause's a very large vacuum (-25hg +) and thats when oil gets really pulled past the seals. Diesels normally don't have a throttle plate (my 3B has , but no real vacuum (as in -2hg) is ever produced. Oil burning in that amount of real poor valve stem seals shows up in gas cars at traffic lights and decells normally hot.
As for Diesels , I would monitor the amount of oil usage and then decide if the effort for Valve stem seal replacement is warranted..

I wanted to see where My 3B engine was in it's life. I did compression test on it , ya-da and valve clearances , no BP -Gulf real gushers that i could see , oil pressure with real gauge (hot 1.5 bar) so a hung up a diaper under the pan. Oil blotter /pick up absorbing cloth with thick plastic under that all strap held up.For the draft tube I took a large tomato juice can 2L size and strapped it up under the tube giving it clearance at the bottom so if it filled up , i would not have it blowing bubbles, plus i added steel wool at the top to prevent and hold in the oil vapours.

Oil level was on the max mark plus 8mm over after first start and check After one tank of fuel ,750 kms oil was down 4mm on stick , second tank was 850 kms (across Canada) oil down 6-8 mm and just under full mark , after getting back to wet coast , checked diaper , no real oil leak , just weeping and dirty gray-black, draft tube oil can catcher had 200-250ml in it after 4500 kms , and i used 1.5 L max to bring the oil level back up to full mark + 8mm over as before.

I did this check to see , where I stood on my new rusty junk, i just bought.
Quite tranny , dead as a dog diesel, always started in-30c .

I wouldn’t do a thermostat if you haven’t had a problem with the temperature , the original unit is industrial and very strong. Pull it and test it in hot water. Mine checked out great. I would do the lifter galley gasket , front main as well as rear seal ,as well as any hoses as already posted.
I picked up a full gasket kits from E-bay just to have spares. Head gasket is crap but all the rest were good.
Post us pictures Rob.

I posted this for Rob , before he gets into it. Myself im running my 3B in testing mode while i get the new body ready for the merge.

Adjust valves when motor is COLD!

Pg. EM-22 in the OEM 3B manual for adjusting valves:

Step 1 Warm up engine!!

I had to check because I've ALWAYS done it hot (and burn my fingers in the process). I wanted to see if all the "finger burning" was worthwhile :)
