Hi all,

I've been struggling the last year or so with the idle on my turbo(ct26) intercooled 3B swapped FJ75. There's a couple problems. First off, I live at sea level in the Vancouver, Canada area, and every I travel to higher altitudes - Kamloops, Calgary, Salt Lake City, the idle on my 3B goes up significantly. I have been adjusting it with the screw (not the nuts) that effect the spring loaded throttle cable. When we go to higher altiltudes for a few days, I will lower the idle. Then when we get back to sea level, I will raise the idle.

However recently at sea level, I've been having to lower the idle because it seems to be climbing up overtime. I also notice, on cold days with the lower idle the truck shakes a lot until it warms up, then it idles nice and doesn't shake. If I raise the idle, it doesn't shake as much when its cold, but once it warms up it seems like its idling at 1000rpm.

I can hear what I think is the EDIC clicking when I turn the key on, and the rod moves and resets before I turn the ignition. What does the EDIC do? Could it be bad?

Any thoughts? Is there a cold start device on these 3B's?

It would be worth considering the leather diaphragm in the injection pump, I'd also drain any accumulated oil from the governor housing. This guide details both of these things:

With regards to the EDIC, can you get a video of it starting showing the action of the EDIC rod on Fuel Control Lever on the pump? The cold start device is glow plugs.

Maybe you could retrofit a HAC if you can find one? How to Add HAC to 3B engine in 81 BJ42 - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/how-to-add-hac-to-3b-engine-in-81-bj42.326474/

Interestingly I so happen to have had idle gremlins of late. Not much experience with high altitude, oz's mountains eroded away long time ago.

I believe it to be the cable is sticky on the knob which adjusts idle, once I am warmed up I have to lower the high idle by turning the knob back. Not considering it a biggy at present. Hopefully they put that cable in your conversion.

I replaced the diaphragm awhile ago preemptively and drain oil from pump most oil changes, drop of neatsfoot. Seems all good.

Don't think it would be edic, it has three settings run, off and overfuel. An edic problem would be a fairly constant problem, regardless of altitude. Like kangaroo hoping. Personally wouldn't fiddle with the screw too often either. Always good to find constants.

How old are your injector nozzles? Shaking makes me think of fuel, once I put in the wrong injectors, shook like a bronco..

Awesome advice. My swap didn't come with a manual idle up knob, but I have since acquired one and need to install it. Also, after reading that document Duncan sent, I noticed I do have some other symptoms - mainly blue smoke with high engine braking down hill. Sounds like its the leather in the diaphragm. I'll take a look and return and report. Thanks gang.

Also, my injectors age are unknown. May be worth putting them on the replacement to-do list.
