Green Lantern
Have Truck, Will Travel
I need help from the vast, unpaid research department of IH8MUD. I've done several searches and haven't found an answer.
I have a 1981 BJ42 with the stock, 3B engine. I drive it at least once a week and it usually starts right up after letting the glow system light up.
In colder weather (yes, I know 40 degrees F ain't cold to y'all), the starter whines and the motor fails to catch. I simply turn the switch off and then turn the switch on again. The motor fires right up, but the glow plug relay under the glovebox chatters like an irate chipmonk. I have to give the motor plenty of fuel for a few seconds or the beast sometimes dies. There's lots of blue white smoke that clears as soon as the motor runs a minute.
I change the oil every 3000 miles and it doesn't seem to burn much (9 quarts in and about 8.5 back out). The blow by sometimes blows a bit of exhaust, but nothing consistent.
I haven't messed with the glow plug relay because everything seems to work. Do these symptoms sound like something y'all have addressed? Or, is all of this normal in a 24 year old BJ42?
Thanks in advance. This is a great truck and I worry over every new noise.
Happy Trails! N
