i picked up my 3B engine today.:) bought it from colby1979. can't wait to get it into a 60. i decided not to put it in my 40. the 40 is just to nice to mess with. i will have lots of questions when i get my parts rounded up. glad there are some diesel professors on the forum. i know very little as they are very unique here in texas. We are more than happy to help and another dieselhead is always welcome.:D

If your used to a rocket in the 2f I am sure the 3b will seem quite underpowered. But alas you buy a pyro and tune the fuel to the max of 1250, have some 2.5 inch exhuast installed and you will be not too bad.

Its amazing once you put on a pyro and find out you have some room to add a little fuel. My power pick up was noticeable. I could finially climb a hill in 4th.

Oh ya, read all the turbo threads you can find on here. Thats a great mod for a NA 3b.

Brownbear- i see pyrometers advertised everywhere. What is the installation like? With reference to the hookup? I assume it has a sensor that connects to the exhaust? How? Thanks in advance.

Buy a pyro with sender unit .. lite a tip to weld on you exhaust manifold .. as closer of you head as you can to get better acuracy reading abut the temp on your pistons .. max temp as BB said .. 1250 ºF

even if your 40 is nice there is just something about a diesel 40 that tickels my ears pink :) That is what I would do even if your 40 is nice. No reason it can't be nice after...

3b

yea i like tooling around in the 40, but for hunting and fishing trips to new mexico and colorado i like the more comfortable ride in the 60. plus power steering and air. also more room for gear. maybe some day sell the fj40 and get a bj42.

I use an ISPRO pyrometer on my 13B-T. Installation was very simple. For the thermocouple (probe), drill and tap onto your exhaust manifold so you have pre-turbo readings. Post turbo readings can be several hundred degrees lower than the pre-turbo temp. My ISPRO kit was very reasonably priced and came with simple instructions to follow. They are even available in 12V or 24V depending on the voltage system of your truck...although here in BC the 24V unit was only available in the Marine series, which had a white face and blue needle. I stuck with the 12V unit and ran it through a relay.

Yep, done right it would be hard to tell it was not factory.

Get the cross member from a BJ40 inchluding hangers, buy factory new engine mounts and try and locate a top shifter housing that puts the stifter in the correct location and Bobs your uncle.

Migh go as far as finding a BJ40 fuel shut down and glow plug system, should take very little to wire this stuff back into your rig.

Your rad would have to be changed out also, order a new factory rad for a BJ42 1983 to 84. Get the rad hoses at the same time.(not sure if the rads are still available?).

Buy the inexpensive transfercase output flanges with two style flange holes and have your drive shafts relengthen and shortened.

Prolly a couple other things I missed, but you can see how parts can get above 1500.00 real quick. Drive shafts alone are over 300.00 to get done.

So I am always surpised when people say they can do it for around 1500.00.

Last diesel install alone I have a folder with over 3K in bills.
