Hi all:

So either I am not super skilled in the search department, or there isn't a ton of COMPLETE info regarding a 60 series powering steering swap into a 3B. I have found a bunch of threads that are good starts, but I want to make sure I am doing this right. So if I am beating a dead horse, and there is complete threads with all of this info, point me there and I apologize.

So my aim is to make a complete thread documenting the process, but will require much help and advice from you all.

The conversion will be going in my 1981 BJ42 that currently has the stock manual steering.

I picked up a parts 60 series a while ago ( 1982) but it also came with an extra parts engine and power steering set up ( i believe from an 85)

So, gathered from what I have read in my futile search attempts, I will need these following parts ( which I have already):

-Pump, Pulley, and Bracket : Now this is the bracket of the 60 series. I am assuming I will have to fab up, or purchase?, a different bracket?

-Steering Box : Will this Box work? Again I'm assuming I will have to source a mounting bracket.

- Double Groove Pulley:
I'm hoping just a basic bolt off, bolt on.

- OTHERLITTLETENSIONER PULLEY I'M NOT SURE THE NAME OF: Again, bolt on?

-Alternator Bracket: Does this need to be changed? I recall reading in some post that it may.

-Thermostat Elbow: Do I switch out the 60 series one to accommodate the new rad?

-Radiator: I understand I have to change the input to the right, to allow room for the pump. I am planning to have my rad rebuilt for a potential turbo down the road, so I guess they can just change that then? I also have a spare 60 series rad, but it looks like more work to swap in than having the existing one rebuilt.

So what am I missing? Is it simply a matter of having the two brackets made up ( one for pump, one for the box)?

Thanks all!

Irah

Break it down into two separate issues.
  • Getting a PS pump on the 3B
  • Getting the 60 series PS box onto your 40 series frame

You appear to have all you need to mount the PS pump on the engine. You need the bracket, pump, idler pulley (tensioner), and 2/3 groove pulley. Now, the only thing you might be missing there is that there is a different alternator tensioner bracket depending on whether you are using PS or not, so you might need to fabricate or acquire the correct alternator bracket (it's the curved bracket the top of the alternator bolts to).

Mounting the 60 series PS box onto your frame is pretty straightforward, it's the same as any other 60 series PS swap. There are a few write-ups on that here (I might point you to Subzali's). Once you have done that, then all you need to do is connect the pump to the box.

Pretty easy, really. I have an incomplete writeup of doing that in the 40 build in my signature, too.

Thanks Dan. I appreciate the feedback.

Now that I realize I have everything for the pump on engine conversion, I am beginning to think about putting a mini truck box on instead of the 60. The conversion looks a little easier, and potentially less "invasive". It also would be easier if I every want to go back to manual steering. ( I doubt I would though)

So now I need to source a box and bracket. I am looking at the JT outfitters bracket. Once I source the parts I will update the thread.

Cheers,

Irah

why are you faultering on the 60 box option.? i have done this conversion and am very pleased with it. i am not able to compare it with the minitruck option, but i was not sorry to see the back of the idler arm and centre pivot stuff. (especially as i had to have a new front crossmember fabbed, and it was simpler without the pivot). i have some pictures and can take some more at the weekend if it helps. i used a 60s box , a relay rod from a 70, and a tapered adapter from sor for the pitman arm.

i dont know if anyone else has done this. but i slid the shock tower back so it's rearmost hole became it's foremost and drilled a couple of new holes. i reversed the shock pin and tapped it down slightly to maintain alignment. i then mounted the box just in front of the tower. worked just fine on my rhd.

Bumping this old thread.

Any references to other more in depth power steering conversion threads please? I'm obviously not a great searcher...

Preferably for a 2b RHD (chancing it) with Toyota truck PS box.

What would be good is a parts list with part numbers?

Cheers.
