Anybody know if the OME J springs and L-shocks will clear 36 TSLs?

Got a stocker 80 that needs some serious meats.

read your PM's

We'll talk

Yup, 36's under J springs + 20mm worth of packers. Been that way through 3 seasons now.

Junk, thanks man. Thats what I was lookin for.

bjowett, do you have any pics of your rig onthe 36s?

Skim,
As Brian pointed out, you'll need to lower the bump stops. Your '93 already has the bump stops on the front so all you need is spacers on all 4 corners.

Beowulf, what size tires are you on? Got a pic?

I run 305 MT's (33") tyres. The J-springs are still on the work bench awaiting a better caster correction solution than the off-set bushings.

Skim,
(well I guess if I was a milk I'd be whole fat), that said, yes, you will need to lower the b-stops. Get it set up, then ramp it and toss it up on a few rocks. Go from there. I think the 36's are the max you'd want for harder core trails unless you plan to go extreme and start choppin body and dropping weight. With the 36s, I've snapped 2 birfields, but that is it and I've been on most of the harder trails around here.

B- by better solution, do you mean offers more caster correction? Or is there something that you don't like with the bushings? I helped install a set on a truck with medium lift and didn't see any potential problems?

Bailey,
The bushings will not get the caster within specs when you go with J-springs and packers. The bushings do a static 3-degrees.

bjowett's solution or the Slee front arms or (hopefully some day) the Slee bolt-on brackets will be needed. I like Brian's idea but we still don't know what range of correction it will provide.

Anyone ever tried reinforcing and re-drilling the bracket on the axle housing?

What is Brian's idea (if its already in another thread just point me too it, please).

Junk,

You are what you eat..........I must be drinking whole fat too then.

Where the birfs easy to break with those 36s? Or where you really pushing it?
What I mean is did you have alot of weight on it or what?

BTW, always remember than when doing repairs on the truck, be the one taking the pics and not the one doing the work. :D

Blue Shirt = Doggie Style JH
Bald Head = Swiftie (who is dodging bullets in Baghdad right now)
Goober with Flip Flops = VZLZFZJ80 Alejandro
Wrench can be seen lurking in the background :D

I'm fortunate enough to have some great folks to wheel with. They get stuck having me. :flipoff2:

First one broke on the trail trying to follow 2 42" buggies

. I think the 2nd one got damaged at the same time then later gave up the ghost at home.

With 36s, if the birfields are in good shape, and you are crawling, then I think you should be fine. That said, I do wheel with 2 spares and some spare axle shafts etc just in case :D

Junk you represent the 80s very well following 42" buggies. Thats sick.

I wheeled with you and Lance years ago at Paragon, one weekend. Dont ask when.
But it was your Rig and a Green 80 on 35 SSRs and another Green 80 on 33s.
You did a crazy steep line, way off camber to the drivers side down. It was cool.

My girl friend said she wanted a 80 like yours.

I was in a Black 92 Runner following behind you.

Now I'm in Cali, and missing that fun East Coast haven called Paragon.

So the general opinion is that 36s, j-springs, L-shocks, and some spacers will work as long as I lower the bump stops.

Cool thanks

Anyone else got 80s on 36s pics?

LOL, I remember that day. It was like 25 deg F in the morning. Didn't know that was you. Cool.

The green 80 on 35" SSRs was Simmons and the other green 80 on 33" TSLs was OMD Old Man Don. Neither wheels much any more.

That was my first day out with the 36's and suspension set up.

The truck drives well on the trail with the 36's no doubt. A few things to keep in mind:
I run 295/75s on the street (BFG AT/KO)
I 'thought' it ran well on the street with just the springs, original OME castor etc, but didn't realize how well it would run once I did other mods like putting in Slee front arms, panhards and upper rear arms etc.

Seriously, right now on the street with 295's it runs really well and on the trail with the 36s I think it is a serious truck. This weekend we ran Pick Your Poison and Drumstick at Paragon. PYP is not rated as high as VooDoo (PYP = 2xblack vs VooDoo = Red), but I think it's a tougher trail (been on both). Didn't break anything, and usually don't.

I really no longer see a need to go to anything over 36" on the 80.
