hhhhmmm....getting the 40 ready for a Saturday local comp...and of course, once I finish all the "important" stuff, it doesn't start...

basically, the orange/switched-hot wire to the fuel pump gets power when the key is on, but the pump doesn't fire...

no other wires have current other than the orange one...

the "easy" guess is the $7 relay....but my concern is that either the Red wire (fuel pump prime?) or the DkGreen/White wire (from ECM) should have a hot current to it as well....

anyone? or is it just as easy as the relay?!?

Sound like just the relay to me boss...

You put seperate power and ground to the pump to verify the pump yet?

haven't yet, but the relay STILL outta be tossin current to it regardless...which it ain't...

$7 relay, and easy/clean swap.....

guess that's what I get for not touching it for...mmm...6 weeks...lol

There are some other wires that should be hot. But, I agree it still sounds like the relay. I have a diagram of the the two connetctors and it tells what the voltage for each wire should be w/ the key on, and with the engin running. Let me know if you want it and I'll shoot it over to you.

The red prime wire is a bypass. You apply battery voltage to it manually to prime (or test) the pump, so no, it shouldn't ever be hot unless you make it so. Can't remember about the DkGrn/White.

shoot it....that could be useful....

woody@ ih8mud.com ;)

yer right, others outta be hot, but I "believe" only after the relay makes them hot....5 wirez on there...

thanks!

now, in looking at the info from Dan, it appears that the dkgrn/wht wire from the ECM should be getting a short-burst of current....pretty sure I didn't test it "immediately" when I turned the key on, so that'll be good to check tonite too...

I assume the 2nd column with the "14" means it should have that much current only once running, not while in "just" start mode....

my luck, the ECM will have finally taken a crap....

Yup. Second column is while engine is running. I have been able to find ECM's (w/ PROM and CALPAK) and fuel pumps at local boneyards for cheap. I carry a spare of each every time I go I out.

I've got a spare pump, Master E8153 (external)....but haven't carried a spare ECM....

even when I drowned the entire passenger side of the rig (rolled into a 36" deep creek - oops), it still started/ran once we blew the cylinders out.

course, that was 2 years back, and it "may" have corroded since....hehehe

I've only had problems once. Kind of a freak deal. In the middle of Golden Spike, the voltage ragulator went bad and fried EVERYTHING. Now I'm too uptight...and their cheap. That being said, I'll never go back to carbed again, and I like the TBI becuase it is so easy to work on.

zipped home at lunch, new relay cured it....

we be comp'n on Sat ;)

I had an issue with my relay, so I thought come to find out it was the the dual tank selector. Changed it and wala! Up and running. This thread was just what I needed. Thanks for adding me to the group.

Thanks for the cross-reference to the master E8153. I picked up one from O'Reilly for $50. Keep it in the truck for my spare. Thanks again.
