so im trying to decide what to put in my 76 fj40 for an engine. i know alot of poeple put the chevy 350s in them but ive heard they have some space issues with them being a little long. ive also been told to put a 327 in it instead because its and about 2 inches shorter. any sugestions? and would i need and special adapters for the 327? im using the stock 4 speed tranny.

350 or 327=same engine with different displacement. The only difference in length would be at the water pump. Not 2 inches more like an inch at the most (not sure). Other minor differences exist with accessories, manifolds and heads. Any small block Chevy adapters apply to both.

You can put the short 327 water pump on the 350 if that inch is important.

327 is setup for racing, 350 much more common in trucks/suburbans. You may consider a 305 if expedition is your style as it has the best mpg's of them all.

Depends on how you plan on driving it.

Since he asked some basic questions, I have a couple.
Is the LS1 (or LS2) bellhousing the same as on the standard SBC?

I have a Mr Goodwrench 350 in mine, I have had ideas about putting one of the LS series small blocks in. Will I need to buy another bellhousing adapter to put the LS1/2 in mine? (nv4500 is my trans)

Go with the 350! I have had a TBI 350 and 700R4 (complete with ECM) and had no problem finding enough for everything. I've been running this set-up for years and have never regretted it once.

283 :D

It hasn't been mentioned yet, but the 383 would be a nice choice too. Small heads and small cam make a very user friendly motor. You could also wake it up a little for a little more fun. The extra power and torque can be addicting.

283 or 327 best Chevy engines ever made. I have had all of them up to a 454. only thing I found to compare is a Ford 289 but. I am not a ford person although had many of them too. Just likr the distributor up front on older fords. Just my opinion and you know what they say about opinions lol!

Love my 327. Pleanty of power and it still does putt along at low RPMs. And it sounds sweet! :D

350. I love my V8, but miss the tourque of the 6 off road and the 327 would be even worse. That 6 could lug down to nothing and not stall, the V8 just can't do that. However, in every other area the v8 is 1000000x nicer to have. I can actually kinda keep up with traffic on the freeway. I get better milage then the 6 did, it sounds awesome. If I had it to do over again, I would do a 383 with an automatic. I think that setup would be awesome.

I've been running a long rod 383 in front of a SM465 for about 17 years.

It's perfect for off road. Goes slow real good. It's known by my regular wheelin' buds as the Tractor.

If you want to go fast, don't get an FJ40:D

Yep just what you need for the trail, a lumpy cam and a Holley 4V. That way you can be the entertainment in the rocks with all the black smoke and restarting :D

327 only kick ass if they start up like this one nice and lumpy . .:grinpimp:

but in a cruiser i don't know. i don't think it will work well in the bush

Mark's adaptor used to mate 350 cu.in. SBC to stock Toyota 4 speed transmission/t-case. The 327's do have a shorter water pump but I went with the longer style pump found on the 350's.

That's downright picturesque!

I really like running my 400ci sbc w/th-350 auto tranny on the road, but it sucked off road. Just could not go slow enough, to keep from bouncing or spinning the tires on the trail. Then I swiched carbs to a old q-jet, and geared down with and Orion T-case. Now I am really happy with it.
Gearing is just something you need to think about with an sbc.
Good luck
Albee
