My 62 is my daily driver for the time being have a chance to buy some 33x9.5s at a smoking deal. tires that i have now are pretty hairy in the snow. plan on lifting couple off inches but not quite in the budget right now. can i fit new tires under with out too many problems?

Depends on how flat your springs are. If they are bad you may rub on the inner fenders. If they are not then you may only rub at full stuff.

I'm running 34x10.50's with tired stock springs on stock wheels. They rub very little at full flex if I'm fully loaded, so you should be fine.

I'm gonna jump from 33's to 35's this summer before I go ahead with my SOA lift. I've got AAL's at all corners and going to throw on my 2.5" rear ironman springs before that.

How do you tell if your springs are flat?
When the truck is sitting on a flat, level surface, they have no arch and are literally flat.
33x9.5's are reportedly fine on stock wheels without a lift. A couple of thoughts: (1) You are probably going to want a least a little wider tire down the road. It might be better to wait and do your lift and tires at the same time, if you don't need tires now. (2) In my experience, 62's and 33s and stock gears do not play well together. After I got my 33x10.5s, I regeared two weeks later. 4.56 gears and 33s will be slightly under geared. 4.88s and 33s will be slightly over geared. Pick your poison.
I think 4.11s and 33s are a perfect combo, but everyone has opinions. 
One fun thing to try after you get them. Air down to 15lbs and drive a twisty road in them. Do the same thing with 33x10.5s. You will quickly realize why 10.5s are a more popular size.
EDIT: you can run 10.5s on flat springs, you just can't do as much that will require suspension flex. I would get the tires and then do the lift after you see what folks have been saying above (then you will see first-hand).

I have to agree with esh about airing down my 33/9.50's, not a good idea
As for gearing, I had to change mine over to 4.88's to get back to factory spec's (FJ 62), original tires were only 28's. 33's through off the speedo and odometer by about 17% as well. Now my rig runs 60mph at 2300rpm, which is fine with me. one note, my stock auto tranny has an overdrive. I don't think 4.88's would be a good idea without overdrive if you drive the rig on the road.
If you go to tlc4x4.com you will find a spec page that lists the factory height of your rig with stock tires, compare the height and it should tell you approximately how much your springs have sagged.

Not to be a hijacker but you guys are already discussing gears and 33's. 
I've recently figured out that 33's and stock gears (are they 3:73's?) do not play well. While it'll run down the freeway at 75, it doesn't like big hills. Will any fj40 & 55 diffs fit the 60? I've been searching this site for hours and haven't found my answers.... I thought I read a thread a few months ago about it, but couldn't find it.
As far as the 33's and stock springs, My 285/75-16's are on stock springs. There are some clamp on helper springs on the back, but I have plenty of room in the front. I haven't had it full lock and tweaked out though. But I've gone through some big ditches, and haven't rubbed yet.
