anybody run 33" tires with a straight six if so how did it handle it

my 84 fj60 is stock now too and barely goes 65mph as is. do you have better performance with yours?

ive got mine to the low 70 but i try not to force it to hard and i have the five speed tran

Tires up to 33" seem to work pretty well with the stock engine and diff ratios. If I go from 31" tires to 33", though, I will change from 3.73 to 4.11 gears. This is close to stock final drive ratios.

I have the H55F also, and can cruise at 70 (2500 RPM), or faster if I need to. I prefer to save the engine, and keeo it below 2700 RPM.

Stock engine and gears, 33's. Great highway combo. Could use a little more ummph on long climbs in the mountains. Runs 70 easily on flat/rolling terrain. If cash wasn't an issue, I'd go for a different setup, but for my situation, this works fine.

Most of the replies so far focus on high speed impacts of tire size changes, but I found that the biggest impact on driveability with 33s and stock gearing were in the low gears. Had to slip the clutch a little in 1st to get moving on a hill or with a load. Climbability offroad in low range was noticeably impacted also.

Ive got 37's and a straight six. She moves out just fine!!!!

darn you diesel guys!

Put in 4.11's and 33's and that will bring you very close to the stock ratio when it rolled out of the factory.

I had 33"s with a five speed and got along fine as long as the grade wasnt too steep

If you're going to change your R&P's you should over compensate on the low (higher numbers) side. Like say 4.56's.

My 7.3 cents.

Also consider the 32X11.50 (Wrangler MTR) tire size; less need to regear; will fit stock or maybe just with shackle lift; had mine at Katemcy and it did well. Of course, everyone there made fun of me for my small tires; but I drove it 8 hrs to and from in relative comfort and wheeled quite a bit. I like this size on a wagon; mine is not set up for hard core rock crawling but rather "the ultimate camping truck."

I'v e got 33's on my FJ62, very nice to cruise the Hwy, and not bad in 4WD either. Truck has 4:11 gear, and a auto transmission. I think it's perfic combo.

DocB...

I like those 32's on your truck. That seems like something I might go for. I don't do a lot of wheeling, but do like to go on trips. I was thinking 33's, but the 32's look like a good upgrade for me.

I am planning on a lift soon (Dakar or Alcan) and will have some extra room in the wheel wells.

what kind of money is involved with changing the gear ratio if it is necessary

The easiest gear change is to swap in the third members from an FJ62 - this gets your 4.11 gearing. without any hassles.

84 fj60

35's 4.11's does ok.it's a pig up hills,usually run 3rd gear up to 3000+ rpm's that'l get me 45mph soon to be puttin 4.88's in. i think that'l help :D love the built 2f in my 40, runnin 33's and 4.11's
