Good luck, I hope it is a solid motor. This is a good resource to identify exactly what you have the production date and what it came out of. It might be more valuable to someone doing a period correct restoration. http://www.nastyz28.com/sbchevy/sblock.php
Tentatively the plan I'm going with is 327 engine, turbo 350 trans and np205 tcase. Go SOA with the yota axles and build spring packs with the 60 spring packs I have and some 62 rear springs packs. Regear to 4.11's and run 38 boggers on 17's. Get new drive shafts made up.
If I go with the np205 will I need to run a Chevy rear axle?
Done Cheap but done right is exactly what i'm trying to do with this one
I may end up buying a th350 and np205 combo with a bell housing and drive shafts from a junkyard. I think the th350 I'm looking @ is from a 2wd vehicle.
Well, you have an auto vs a manual which is personal preference. And then the stock 4 speed/transfercase which can take the abuse, but will not have an over drive (not that the 350/400 would either)

True. I like the manual trans but if I'm stuck traffic it's not as much fun. But I have a short commute so it's not a big deal.
Now I'm wondering about cost of an adapter vs cost of new custom drive shafts and a new crossmember and addressing adapting the speedometer cable.
I like the h42 that's in it and the way the truck drives. I also want to accelerate faster and be able to take it on the highway and cruise @ 75 and keep up with traffic on mud tires.
I looked @ an rpm calculator and it said @ 75 mph with 38 inch tires and 4.11 gears I'd be at about 2700 rpms.
I would run the auto 205 and a chevy rear axle. You can find 700r4s pretty cheap now days I would probably just run one of them. I did a 350 4l60e/toyota split case. I wish I would have skipped right to a chevy axle, it would have cost less and been stronger with a lot more options for inexpensive upgrades later. Maybe even find a np241 with the right drop, its a bit smaller and still holds up well.
