hey guys/girls...

I've got a 82 fj60 and I got a chance to buy a running 83 Mercedes Benz 300TB turbo diesel motor for super super cheap,my question obviously is,has anyone put one in a 60 series or does anyone know if could even be possible to run one in it? I really can't find any info on this motor in here?

Thanks for any help/info.

Anything is possible.
I'll guessing you meant 300TD?
Search the 40 threads, there have been conversions done. If it works in a 40 it should work in a 60.

i have one i'm putting in my 40. it pushed a car that weighs about as much as a 60 pretty well in stock form but got twice the mileage. the car was much more aerodynamic ill grant you. there not a ton that can be done to tune them though unless you can source a euro pump and get it custom built (that's what i did). not too expensive but a challenge to find in my experience. cost about $1500 including build and shipping. thats not too bad in my books for a bolt on 50% more power. the biggest problem will be front axle clearance because the engine has a front oil sump so you'll need a lift or sorts for sure

The guy in Sweden that does the pumps now has his OM617 super pump dialed in. I guess he's busy as hell but by the time I get to this swap I hope he can supply me a pump.

This motor has been put into mini-vacation and Tacos as well. So with the modded pump it's possible to get 200-225 hp with a motor that revs similar to an F with an even higher redline.

Don't know if there is a ready made adapter plate available tho.

Not Toyota but here's the vid of Dieselmeken putting his first OM617 super pump on. He used 7.5mm elements up from stock 6mm I think. It's my understanding that the 617 can't really handle or use much more fuel than that. The 7.5mm should be good for 200-225 HP though the motor might require work (turbo) to get there.

Thanks a lot for the info everyone. Motors getting dropped off today,I have a while before it goes in so I'll be cleaning it up and doing some research on this motor and what I'll need to throw it in.

Man, let me be a wet towel. I think the 300TD is better suited for a 40 series. Not sure it would be enjoyable on the pavement/highway use/built&lifted/etc. Having said that, I have 0 experience with the 300td.

I always wondered how one of these would do in an FJ40. I've played around with a couple of OM617s and they're pretty cool. It's fun dumping random stuff in the fuel tank and having them run.

Performance wise I imagine they'll have a tough time moving a portly FJ60 without some tweaking.

I have a 4BT powered 62 and the only reason why that engine moves that truck around is because of the sheer heft of that engine's huge stroke.

I'm imagining an out of the box OM617 in an FJ60 to feel a lot like a BJ60, which I have driven and is so slow that it makes an air cooled VW bus feel downright inspiring.

Either way I'd love to see the results. I'll bet you'll get some pretty good fuel economy if installed with a 5 speed.

What transmission & transfer will you use?

Honestly I'm not even sure at this moment? I just got it Saturday, the tranny is still bolted to it. I have zero expeierence in this swap or motor alone,I got it for damn near nothing which is why I picked it up.

I have a long way to go with what I am going to do with it but I'm thinking maybe just maybe I'm in over my head?

That's one of the questions I did have in my head, after all I do have a full roof rack, front and rear bumpers as well.
I have to do some deep thinking here. Like I said in my other replies,I got this motor with tranny for damn near nothing so I think I went on impulse lol...time will tell.

You can at least sit on it since it was practically free. Maybe you will stumble on a 40 without an engine/tranny one of these days..

You might be able to source a Mercedes case from a G-wagen, I'm not 100% sure but I think they are compatible, anyone else that can back me up on that?

you can always change the gearing in the diffs to suit your needs, it may hurt the mpg and top end but you could gear it for better acceleration to make up for being potentially under powered
