I have a 73 FJ40 3 speed and want to get a little more cruising speed on the highway. I spoke with a local mechanic who told me that putting in a 4 speed transmission would not get me anymore speed?? Anyone know much about this or anything about getting more speed out a 3?

This is the 70 Series section, not the 1970s section. You have an FJ40, which is a 40 series Land Cruiser.

The top gear in a 4 speed and a 3 speed are both 1:1, so, no, you will gain nothing more in 4th (or 3rd) gear.

You can try changing your differential ratios or installing a 5 speed transmission which has a 15% overdrive.
