I've been trying to get my timing belt on and the timing marks correct all day. The cams are relativly in line with the marks, but the crank is off by a couple of teeth. A knowledgeable guy in my local club, who has done this on Hondas says that since I have spun the crank and one of the cams independantly of the rest I may have to pull the valve cover in order to make sure that the cams are in the right spots before installing the belts.

I looked in the FSM for this procedure in the rebuild section and don't see it mentioned. I also rechecked the timing belt replacement procedure and it gave no warnings about not doing this, even calling for turning the crank to align the marks. So the question is whether I really did screw up the timing or, since I haven't found a mention of correction or warning in the FSM, if it's possible to screw it up.

I can't remember but their should be alignment marks on the cam pulleys for TDC. Check the FSM and look at the pulleys closely. My brother has his FSM or I would look for you. Every other 'yota I've wrenched on has a mark for TDC on the cam

Every toyota motor I have done a belt on had marks on the pulleys that lined up with a line on the back of the timing cover behind them. And you just pointed the crank to tdc at the pointer. However, I haven't done my 3.4 yet. But if you have been messing around with the cams and the crank, there is a very good possibility you have it all out of whack. I would pull the valve covers to make sure all is straight with the cams. then make sure you at tdc on the crank. I am almost positive it's a non-interference engine so you shouldn't break anything.

You could have the cams 180 deg off tdc. I did that a while back on a RX300. Think I ended up putting everything back together and doublechecking(kinda sucks when everythings off).... After you get the cams lined up and the timing belt on, turn the cam pulley a few times. I think the 3.4 is a interferance motor. Just a good check to do to make sure you got everything right befor firing it up and realizing your off(and bending a valve).

Thanks for the replies, I just lined up the marks and set the crank and everything's been running fine for a couple of days now.
