Hello! Long time lurker first time poster!

I was getting P0301 Cylinder Misfire code and after narrowing it down to a likely injector problem (starts and idles fine when cold, after warming up the sluggishness and misfiring begin; replaced all spark plugs and moved them without issue, replaced all coil packs and moved them without issue as well. So that left me the injector that would create that code. Hopefully.) Anyway, I bought ONE new injector and plan to clean the other four in the bank while I've got all this out. But when I measure the old fuel injector's brittle insulator (shaped like an open-ended top hat) to the new insulator, they are different. Not only that, they allow different amounts of the injector to project out the bottom and into the cylinder (.2200" for the original vs. .1380" for the replacement).

My question is this: is that difference by design, and ultimately, will it matter? they are otherwise identical in diameter and fit on without issue, they just make the injector tip...stubby. I'm sure when they are reinstalled and the fuel rail tightened down it'll be a tighter seal and smooshed into place, but I wanted to reach out to the oracle that is this MUD forum and see if anyone has any input/thoughts/advice/experience?

Your help is most appreciated!

What year is your Cruiser?

1998, 281K miles, we are the second owners. *decent* service records by the first owner for the first 270K, but I find little half-assed repairs here and there that I end up having to fix.
I began this repair with the intent of doing a write up but I got the momentum going during the tear down and now here I am at the injectors. Maybe I'll photograph the reassembly process...

23291-41010 is the correct insulator for 1998 model.

Ok excellent, thanks medtro, then I have six of the correct ones! I wonder if these top-hat-looking ones are OEM or another sketch repair done by the previous owner's service techs?

either way, thanks!

The insulator on the left (in your original post) are the original insulators that came from toyota. Not a sign of a sketchy repair done by prior owner.

Both my 98 and 99 injectors had the same insulator design, and they were the originals.
