im thinking of selling my 2nd gen ext. cab pickup and getting a 4runner. Im set on a 4 cylinder 5 speed 2nd gen but im having a hard time finding any. Almost every one i find is a v6 auto...i want one with the gear drive t-case so i can gear it or run duals easily. Are these things that rare?

Yes, they're somewhat rare. Once you find one they'll probably want an arm/leg for it. At least that's what I experienced when I was in the market for one.:)

Did a 4cyl/5speed swap into a 2nd gen.

A lot of time invested, but not that hard.

Had a complete donor truck when started.

Just for the record, very under-powered when finished

I have a 2nd gen 4runner with a 22re and a 5 speed and it's not underpowered at all. Much faster than my FZJ80.

Keep searching and you can find one but the vast majority are V6s.

Also, if it's an auto, the manual swap is pretty straight forward.

As bad as people make out the 3.blow, 3.slow, wee-point-slow, whatever you want to call it to be, it's not a terrible engine, as long as it's maintained. I have a friend rebuild his, basically stock, and he just babies it as far as tune-up stuff goes, and it's not a bad engine, and it will probably last him a lifetime.

Get one with low miles for a good price, or get one for $500 that needs a rebuild and spend $1000 AT MOST and have a brand new engine.

my 2 cents :)

I'm not so worried about the motor.. i want a 4runner with the gear drive tcase and it's my understanding that it only came behind the 4th cylinder 5 speed??
