With the cooler weather I find that shifting from 1st to 2nd makes for gear grinding/clashing.
This goes away went the gearbox oil warms up.

This is common, right? Do I need to get a rebuild done?

Normal. You could change to a different oil , but if it only takes a few minutes why bother. Some owners warm the gearbox up by slipping the transfer case into neutral and revving it in gear.
Have you tried taking off in 2nd? I rarely do a 1st to 2nd shift unless I'm on a very steep hill or in a tight spot. I think the gearbox may last a little longer by doing this

I was only doing 2nd gear starts when I first got the 74. Somehow I slipped back into using first.

Good to know that my problem is nothing to worry overmuch about.
Thanks!

Synthetic oil can help a lot with this issue.

The 1st & 2nd gear synchros come as a synchro/hub assembly as is a lot more costly than the synchro rings for gears 3, 4, & 5, so you really don't want to have to replace it. Plus, the first and second gear rings are quite large.
