Hi all, I am looking to replace my 2LT (1st gen roller/rocker) head. There seems to be many different suppliers of heads to be purchased. My question is: are there superior/inferior brands? I have read that brands coming from China or India? may be inferior as far as build and materials used. I have emailed AllHead out of OZ with no responses. I have found one OEM option in the States, however it is a bit pricy $780.00 USD. The other ones I have found are on eBay. Any help with clarifying brands or websites that I should be looking at would be appreciated.

I'm afraid I can't weigh in on the eBay parts but I think I'm in the market for a new head on mine too. Would you mind sharing your oem source? I'm on the side of the road 1000 miles from home so waiting on Chinese parts from eBay is not necessarily a luxury I have right now...

Right on. Thanks. Is that a bare head or a built head? I can't find that. Also are you considering a 3l head at all?

I highly recommend you guys stick with the Toyota OEM parts. I looked a lot into aftermarket heads at one point when I upgraded mine, and I found that OEM is the way to go. I'd read a few horror stories about the cheaper aftermarket heads. Things like the camshafts self destructing etc.

Keep in mind the OEM parts available now are upgraded parts and are improved over the original parts. Looking up part numbers, I *think* they are as follows:

For 83-89 2LT (rocker head motor):

New head part number:
11101-54071

Replaces part number:
11101-54070

I bought my improved OEM 2LTE head from Barry at J Cruisers JDM Parts and Vehicles for Sale in BC Canada. He is a really great guy and can provide all the parts you need with the head (like gaskets, head bolts etc.). He sells the OEM parts. He also is super knowledgable about the different versions of heads and which ones are better etc. Definitely a good guy to talk about. OEM will be more pricey, but very much worth it if you intend to keep your vehicle for a while.

GTS, can you elaborate on what they've improved over the original? I will gladly spend a small fortune if I can drive this truck without the constant fear of a cracked head

All I can tell you is the newer part numbers are far less prone to cracking. I don't know exactly what Toyota changed about them though. They continued making the 2LTE/2LT-II into the early 2000's, and basically all the 2LTE's that came out after 95 or so had far less problems. People here in Canada that have had Japanese Import Hilux's and Prado's for a decade now that had new heads put on have had little or no cracked head issues since, where the original heads ALL had failed when the trucks first came in.

Of course the early rocker head 2LT was less prone to cracking heads to begin with. There are a number of original 2LT diesels here (that could actually be purchased new in Canada in the 80's) that are still running on the original heads with 400,000kms+ on them.

Cheers,
Nick

Damn. Sounds like you Canadians have got the goods. And here I was on my way to BC anyway. Just needed a thousand more miles to get there...

I believe they smoothed out a hump that inhibited coolant flow and reinforced some other crack prone areas. Most owners replace them with the 3L head.

@gts, I think I am going with the OEM version. I will try and contact J cruisers in BC and talk with them about the updated head. Cheers

I have an extra parts engine I would part with the head. I have also seen a whole engine and tranny on Craigslist recently for 700 here in courtenay on vancouver island. The parts engine I have is unknown condition. But i just split the injection pump in half and it was full of diesel and it is not seized.

The parts engine I have is a 2L

Hello Nick,
Not sure if you're the Nick that used to be on toyotadiesel.com, but just wondered if you might know where I could find a new or used head for a 1987 2LT? Rad developed a leak and got the usual hairline cracks between the valves. Part number is probably 11101-54071 The engine in the veh. is a low mileage JDM motor out of an 87 Surf that was dismantled on the Island. Has full honing marks in all the bores so am now certain that it was indeed a low miles engine. (A lot of JDMs are clocked after all)
Can't send you a PM apparently so am posting here.
Cheers!

Probably your best bet is to order a Toyota OEM head replacement. You can get these from any number of re-sellers. You could talk to Barry at JDMparts.ca (south interior BC), as he has lots of experience with these and knows exactly all the parts you'll need for the job. He'll ship you a kit. Or you can get quotes from some of the online sources of Toyota parts to see if you can get cheaper pricing. Amayama, Partsouq, Megazip, etc. There are also a number of landcruiser/toyota parts retailers that carry these cylinder heads. Just remember the early 2LT is totally different than the 1989+ 2LT. So make sure you get the right revision of all the parts.

Appreciate your reply, but so far have not found a single retailer who has these in stock, including JDMparts.ca Might be something in Japan, but haven't got that far yet.

Interesting; maybe they're just carrying the 1989+ cylinder heads for the most part now. You might just have to order direct from one of those larger international suppliers then. I've ordered items from all three of the ones I listed above. They've all been good to deal with in my experience.

Everywhere says "discontinued". Might be some left in Japan or overseas somewhere, but you'd need names in places like Thailand or Latin America.

Found a place in Montreal called United Welding Processes that repairs heads with proper pre and post heat. They also have a shop in Toronto which might be a bit cheaper on shipping. Have spoken to both shops and they seem like good people. Very good reviews online too.

How about part number: 11101-54062 ? I'm seeing lots of stock on that. It's the last of the rocker head 2LT cylinder head part numbers. Pricey, but well worth it for an OEM part in my opinion.

You'll also need:
- Headgasket,
- Head bolts,
- Valve grind kit (includes the upper gaskets/seals and valve seals)

Might as well do the timing belt and waterpump etc. while you're in there too.

That motor should be good for another 200,000-300,000km after that.

Go here to find the part numbers of the rest of the stuff you need: 1985 - 1989 Toyota HILUX/4RUNNER TRUCK LN61 OEM Parts | Japan sales region, , 910424

Thanks a bunch for that, but so far haven't seen any genuine Toyota heads with that number, and if going Chinese I might as well go with the correct "11101-54071" head I guess.

I wonder what the difference between the two heads actually is? Just a bit heavier? Looks the same between the valves doesn't it?

Have put in a price request with this company in Japan, we'll see what they say. Genuine Toyota OEM parts supplied from Japan - Nengun Performance

These guys seem quite comprehensive too, but they want all your info before even offering a quote:
