I’ve picked up a used 2H to replace my H in my HJ45. This is my first Toyota diesel I’ve fooled with. Wanting to reseal it while I’ve got it out and paint it. Can anyone recommend what seals I should do besides the rear main, oil pan, front timing cover? And is there a Toyota manual available for the 2H? Lastly where to source seals and parts?

Thanks!
Jason

I would read up on the timing cover removal. I thought there was some sort of procedure that involved baking the cover in order to remove bearings. Hence why I didn’t do it.

I bought seals at RaddCrusiers, diesel power parts Austria has good quality complete gasket sets.

Replace every gasket you get access to IMO.

If you know it runs well with low k's just spruce her up with paint. I do like extractors/headers.

But if unknown, may be worth going for a full rebuild whilst you have it out. Then you know you are good for many years. My original 2h has 350k kms, valve seals and rear main could do with replacing but oil loss is negligible and I average 10l/100kms so I just keep going.

Should do injectors at the very least. More than likely rockers need some attention too. Never had to heat anything to remove anything off a 2h. Pulled a few. They are beautifully simple, like good poetry. The cast timing cogs are numbered.

In my mind they are worth investing love.

+1... maybe with the exception of the rear main seal - I'd do that one.. and the spigot bearing.

as per usual duncan is on the money! rear main just do it with the gear box off. It depends how kind pvo was to the gear box, as the h55f can well outlast the rear main seal if country miles and not riding the clutch. I have to wait till my clutch is pretty serious before contemplating the rear main. So a blessing in disguise.

Thanks so much for all the replies! @duncanrm what is the spigot bearing?

Also known as the Pilot Bearing.. its what the snout of the input shaft of the gearbox inserts into.. behind the clutch - in the end of the crankshaft.

A good tip for many of us, thank you!

I would do the following seals

Front main
Rear man
Lifter side covers
New valve cover gasket
Timing cover gasket only if it is leaking (it rarely does)
Oil pan gasket

Engines Australia has a decent seal kit. Other sources for diesel parts are Radd Cruisers and EBI cruisers in Canada.

If head is coming off for a top end refresh, do valve stem seals

Diesel injection pumps on the 2H are bullet proof. I would not touch it unless its got fueling issues.

I would also check to see if the glow plugs work. Note the voltage marked on them and replace in kind with OEM. Aftermarket ones are not good.

If I were you I would do a compression check and start the engine securely supported off the floor and see how it runs. If it has good compression it should fire up fast (no long cranks). Toyota does a fantastic job of building these engines. If compression is good (450 psi), fires up quick, and no blue or white smoke, run it.

Talk to you tomorrow

You got this. Some pics for inspiration. My young son at age 10 rebuilding his 2H engine.
