I’m putting a 2H (unknown year) into my 1980 HJ45 pickup to replace the H.

I have the power steering pump and bracket but no reservoir and brackets for mounting the reservoir.

Also my alternator bracket looks hacked up.

So can anyone post pictures of these on the engine and if possible the brackets so I can see what I need and where they mount?

I’ll be posting in the classifieds if anyone has leads.

Thanks Jason

The HJ45, and the HJ47 never had Power Steering.. so there's no photos of such reservoir mounting - make up your own approach, in the HJ60 and HJ75 the reservoir was actually mounted to the inner fender.

Note:

  • If you're planning to mount your power steering pump in the standard 2H position used in the HJ60/HJ61/HJ75 you're going to need to modify your bottom radiator outlet so it clears the pump pulley.
  • There's two different varieties of 2H power steering pump, you'll need the earlier one if you've got the correct engine mounts for your HJ45 (you need HJ47 or early HJ60 mounts). The early power steering pump is known as the "6 bolt pump".
  • You will need an idler bracket and pulley to match your mounts
  • You don't mention what power steering approach you're going to use, most common in Australia is a "60 series" conversion - if you're going that route you'll need a variety of bits and pieces to make that work
  • Your HJ45 will have a bell housing mount to support the transmission, this wont work with a 2H bell housing and you'll need a transmission mount, most common is an HJ47 cross member.
  • There's two different 2H Bell Housings.. you need an HJ47/Early HJ60 Bell housing

Here's a few images that will assist:
  • HJ47 Radiator Modification for Power Steering Pump: Link to Photos
  • Comparison of 2H Engine Mount, Power Steering Pump and Transmission Cross Member types, you'll need all HJ47 or early HJ60 to match your HJ45 chassis: Link to Photos
  • 2H Bell Housing Comparison: Link to Photos

Power steering is kinda overrated but the 2H is a nice conversion - much better availability of parts over your H Diesel.

@duncanrm thanks for all the information. Here are a couple pictures. Of my pump that came with the 2h and engine Mount for that side. Also gear box is mounted and ready. I see what you stated about the lower radiator hose. I plan on using the bellhousing off the h with the 4 speed. I was told everything should bolt up.

I think thats a 4 Bolt pump.. so you may have to do a tiny bit of fabrication to make something work for the mounting. The H Bell Housing reportedly can work but I hear getting a starter motor in may take some effort with a grinder on the oil cooler cover.

Great thanks for the help and information that the reservoir mounted to the inner fender. Current reservoir is on the firewall. So I’ll probably reuse it.

I was just wanting something more factory looking.

Wanted to thank @duncanrm again for the pictures and info above. Over the weekend I confirmed that I have the wrong motor mounts so I’m headed to my machine shop to see if they can help me. If not I’ll try and source some from where I got the 2H. My biggest concern is the starter tho (like stated above). I really don’t see how it will clear the oil cooler. I have a 2H starter on the way to compare and see if it will mount to the H 4 speed bellhousing. Really hoping I don’t have to change transmissions and bellhousings as to the expense but most importantly time. I need to have this HJ45 finished in 55 days for my son’s wedding. They are using it as their getaway vehicle. I have a build thread going over in the 45 section. Any help on grinding that oil cooler or starter mounting would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Thanks!
Jason

Over on my 2H/12HT Facebook group (link in signature) this question was recently asked.. relevant screenshots below are of relevance to you.. I would suggest the H Bell Housing and 2H engine is not for the faint hearted!..

Oh boy…I’ll check out the facebook page. Thanks for the help. Just not sure where to cut the piece for the oil cooler or the exact issues with the starter lug and tapping he is referring to. Thanks!
