What is "too hot" for a 2H?

Clearly the thermostat opens at around 170*F (80-something* C)
But how much hotter can it get before one should shut down?

What is an appropriate maximum operating temperature?

Its hot down here. Now that I've got the thermostat replaced and the rad and block flushed (dirrrrrrr-tyyyyyy in there!) the temp guage is reading between 150 and 170 most of the time... when I spend time idling around, especially w/ hills involved, the temp climbs up to around 200 and sits there instead.

Anything to worry about?

Hi Sandcruiser ,sounds like your cooling system is good.

200F is 93.3C which is about the normal maximum for any vehicle especially given your hot climate.
A lot of heat sensors for themostats and electric fans open at 85-92c
Using a high viscosity oil will help in your situation.
I take it your using an aftermarket temp gauge or you have an accurate way of measuring it.

Aftermarket mechanical temp guage. The PO put it where the tach "should" go. Really Really easy to keep an eye on the temps.

I'm running 40weight. Seems to work fine. 20w-50 is pretty popular here too.... might switch at next change. Only problem with 20w-50 is that it may or may not be available at a gas station when/if I need to top off. 40 is what most of the diesel cabover's use so it is available in various flavors EVERYWHERE.

For others following the thread: there's another thread on mud somewhere that agrees that around 200 is fine, 210 is "start paying attention" and 220 is "too hot".

Cheers
