Hi all, looking for some opinions about blow-by.

I bought my 2H at 425,000 with a rebuilt engine. Now with 431,000 on the clock and I'm noticing blow-by. With the engine idling and the oil cap off I can see faint little puffs of smoke coming out. It's not crazy, the cap isn't flying off and there is no sign of oil actually spouting out. Is this to be expected or something I should address?

Unfortunately I bought it in a rush and so didn't ask about the details of the rebuild. Overtime I've come to realise that there are degrees to which an engine can be rebuilt. So maybe the guys I bought it from just did the bare minimum to get it going. I did look for signs of blow-by before I bought it and was satisfied there was none. Seems strange to me that it's developed so soon.

Pretty normal for there to be some blow by gasses coming out the oil filler cap, especially on a diesel that old. Not uncommon for the cap to dance around a little, but it shouldn’t be puffing a lot or blow the cap off.

Check compression. That will tell you a lot. Do it after you adjust your valves.

Pretty normal. Check compression and leak down if you like to get an idea of how things are inside, but doesn't sound anything alarming.
