84 FJ60. Invariably, I have two water pump gaskets. Do I use both, or one? The pump I removed appears to only use the half gasket.

I installed with the half gasket, put everything back together, and the back of the pump is leaking like a sieve - from the top/back of the pump. Seems like it's above the 'half gasket'.

So, want to do it properly. Does the large gasket go under the backing plate? If so, I figured the Aisin would have come already installed.

No, I did not use any RTV when I installed the first time. Mixed suggestions from searching on the need for it.

I've searched like a mad man, and just want to put the thing back together...preferably leak free.

Remove the pump again.
Carefully scrape the engine mounting surface clean & flat with a putty knife. A little 800 grit wet dry emory paper used with a cleaning solution never hurt anything.
Wipe clean & dry.
Clean the pump sealing surface again
Apply a thin bead of silicone sealant that's compatible with coolant on both sides of the gasket.
Reinstall the pump.

I've never disassembled the pump plate to replace the inner gasket and none of the pumps (4 in three cruisers) ever leaked.

At least that's what I'd do. It never failed me in the past. (But not to say that a pump couldn't leak by the inner gasket).

So did you end up just cleaning it up and putting silicone sealant that is compatible? I am having the same issue but one of my bolts on the pump plate is stripped. So I might just shoot some Toyota Black glue in there and seal it up since the plate lifts up a little all the way around just not where the bolt is.

I'm not sure if one bolt out would make much difference in the sealing, as it would not be equally torqued down. But in that case I would use a sealer. Most of the time I would not use a sealer.

You can heli-coil a stripped thread too. A help-coil kit comes in different thread sizes etc with a tap.

I got it out, although it was not the way I wanted to. This has been the only bolt that I have had issues with on my truck. Even the thermostat housing bolts were easy to remove and didnt have rust.
