Because you are running propane it will allow you to use larger amounts of boost that pump gas. Propane is the eqivelant to 104-106 octane gas. With an increase in octane it increases the amount of boost you can run before you get knock (predetonation).

On a 3S (V6 twin turbo intercooled 8:1 comp ratio) can you can run about 14-15 lbs of boost without knock with premium gas. One of the guys in the club was using propane injection rigged to the throttle position to help cool the air and to increase octane and was getting higher boost numbers. Also as crazy as it sounds people are putting water injectors in the intake. The water increases the density of the fuel air mixture making it less prone to predetonation. Installing a larger intercooler also brings up the amount of boost a person can run.

At about 14-15lbs of boost I started to get "blow out" and had to change to a copper plug from the stock platinums to get a stronger spark. If I don't change my plugs often enough I will get blow out at peak boost WOT conditions.

Why do you feel the Megasquirt is too complicated a system?

I am sure with the turbo you are useing that unless you hit really high rpms you may not be able to get high enough pressure to worry about needing a complicated system.

If I am looking at your picture correctly are you running the turbo downstream from where the fuel comes in??
I have seen turbos GLOWING red hot from the heat after racing. with the heat of turbo and the pressure aren't you concerned that on a hot dry day with prolonged use you will have an big boom under the hood?!

Complicated/not complicated depends on the individual and the electronics capabilities they have. Personaly I like the idea of getting a standard GM chip reprogrammed and going from there.

I see no reason to go to the extent that the Megasquirt does and not run a multiport injection system...

Also the GM stuff is nice and cheap..

You are correct on the propane having a higher effective octane than gasoline. Although propane's range of octane varies depending on which lit you are citing.



You are comparing apples to oranges here. The 2F will never be a high performance motor, period. Talking about higher boost numbers (not that 15 lbs is high or anything) is a waste of time. 7.5:1 is stock compression ratio in a 2F (depending) Most of the time I see ~ 5-7 lbs of boost before I shift. That is enough to make a 2F feel much more powerfull.


Water injection has been around a long time. There are a multitude of reasons for it. I had a buddy that had water injection on his 40 back in the 80's because he shaved the head too much and had slight overheating problems. The amount of energy it takes to convert the liquid water to a gas is where you get the benefit. That energy was going to end up causing excess heat. I contemplated running a water injection system on my motor but wanted to see how it did without it first. As it turns out my motor never gets over 190* on a 108* day.. So I see no reason for it.
Intercooler's lower the charge temp (and volume) that is why you can run higher boost pressures. Again.. If you want to hit over 15 lbs of boost reliably get a different motor. The 2F was not designed for it.

The turbo never gets that hot. It is down stream of the propane mixer. it is a very simple and efective way to set up a turbo system. You do not have to worry about mixture adjustment under boost. I have driven the truck all day at 108* without problems...

So am I concerned?? Not at all.

Stupidfrenchjackass was thinking of doing the twin turbocharging system (one turbo per 3 cylinders) I do not think it ever happened.

Your system looks pretty sweet.
Being as you run propane do you thing propane would make a decent DD option. Also I was wondering what sort of MPG,or whatever you measure propane efficency with, you are getting?

Do you think there would be a risk running a gas carburator upstream from the turbo?

Propane on a DD is kinda of a PITA due to few fill up locations and the design of the tanks..

I was getting horrible mileage for a while. Until I bought a new mixer for my truck. Now it is basically flawless.

think 12 ish mpg at least.

The turbo I have was designed to run a gas carb...

I've been contemplating an EFI turboed 2F for a while now. The 2F is begging for it. Jim Van De Ven and I talked about it a couple of years ago and he has done it (Multi-port injection). Very happy with it the last time we talked.
 
Jim looked at my system while we were at the BHCC..

He talked about the MPI but I had not heard about it since then.. So he did the turbo FI route???

So If I tried to do this setup on my 3FE would I have to get the computer re-programmed or will it still run fine?

It runs flawlessly now but I don't like the power output its got.

If you don't want to go the EFI route, what are good candidates for carbs?
 
Holley 4 barrell or a small something or other would be perfect.

Basically any carb around the 500cfm mark would be nice.
 
Thanks! I guess that my 390cfm Weber won't cut it...... hmmm time to do some research.... Are there any Aisen models that can put out this much?
