2F head

I think Unicorn Dust is another name for the cold climate auxiliary accelerator pump, altitude compensator, and the anti-backfire valve found in some stock Aisin carburetors....none of which are found on a Weber. Dude, that video got me laughing. ('Cause it's true....)

Pre '68 F engines used siamesed exhaust ports and a deep "bathtub" style combustion chamber. They're pretty much on their own so far as interchanginf anything.

From then until '72 the F engine used a flattop piston and a closed combustion chamber.
'73 and '74 F engines used an open combustion chamber and a very small dome on the piston.

'75-'80 US variant 2Fs used an open chamber and a domed piston.

'81 and later 2Fs used a closed chamber and a flat top piston.

A '73-'74 F head will be a bolt on swap to any of the 2F, producing more compression on the '75-'80 blocks.

A pre '73 F head will swap to the later 2F engines once the rocker arm oiling is addressed. There will be piston/head interference on the early 2Fs

You can install an early 2F head on a late 2F engine. You will loose compression.

You can install any 2F head on the pre-'73 F engines. Again, you will loose compression, especially if you install an early 2F head with the open chamber.

Mark...

What's the story on heads going TO a '73/'74?

Mark, if I follow what you wrote then a '81 and later 2F head would work on my 1970 F block? I'm faced with a cylinder head which does not have the forward bolt hole which prevents using a header. Thanks.

I found this head today here in Cuenca. You wouldn't believe the size of the "barn" and all of the various car parts stored there. I was impressed and I have been to many junk yards in my life. Anyway, it appears to me to be an open chamber head, probably mid-seventies. But I cannot match up the number on the casting to anything on toyotaoverstock.com parts diagrams. It does have the eight bolt holes for my headers. Obviously no valves or other hardware but they want $500 for this head.

1. It's not April fools Lenny.
2. The valve guides don't line up on the top of the head like 1967 and newer heads ALL do.
3. It doesn't have 12 PORTS in the side of the head for the intake and exhaust.
4. It won't work for you. It's a pre-67 head.
5. Valves are generally not separated from heads unless and until it has been determined that the head is junk.

Thanks Mark. The second place we went to yesterday was just a small mechanic shop that my neighbor used for sourcing parts for his 1975 F100 pickup truck. The fellow took down the information and called back yesterday afternoon with a price of $450 for head and carburetor, I don't need a carburetor so I will call him today (er, have my wife call him as my Spanish is really bad) and see if he can get me a casting number to know what it is. I am aware of a company here in Cuenca that moves containers from the USA to Ecuador, and back for that matter. And am hopeful that a container coming down has room for a small pallet that could have a head on it. Also down here they are saying that "IF" I could find a complete engine it would be $2K. Thanks for taking the time to look at the pictures. FJ40Jim advised the same as you the "terrible staggered valve head."

Mark, is it true that I cannot run a 1978 2F head on a 1970 F engine? Is there something that prevents using my top end plumbing on the later model head?

I'm not sure about the above....I've got an early F (off a '64) that I bolted up a '73 head to. This allows me to use the later model carb intake (double barrel) and improved exhaust manifold. I've got it running fairly well...don't have compression numbers as I don't have a compression tool. I think I have a little bit of a vacuum leak, but other than that, it idles and drives fine.
This was a tremendous help for me, related to a question in an unrelated thread. I just wanted to say thank you for providing the information, as it makes a huge positive change in my rebuild outlook. Thanks a ton.
