2F Cam Regrinds, where and what?

So I picked up a nice 87 with a good tight 180s compression used motor that is out of it. I want to change the cam and toss a Webber on it (so it is easier to tune plus I already have one given to me).

I am seeing RV cam this and that. Terminology a little before my time but figuring 3/4 RV cam is what I want. I remember reading some place up in the Pacific Northwest regrinds these, forgot who but that’s what I remembered from researching threads.

What else should I get? Like stock valve springs ok? What dizzy? I will get this stuff and a split header from man-a-fee and obviously desmog it.

Anyone been down this path want to help a brotha out? Advice welcome, want to get this baby on the road ASAP.
 
180 compression?? are you sure?
if the above is accurate, obviously someone has done some work to it already.
why is the motor out of it?
 
Got it at the shop and they put it on a stand, spun the starter with a spare battery and said 170s-180s and to hurry with parts.

It looks like a rusted heap and was thinking it would need a rebuild.

The motor is out of a parts truck, do not know the history. Aisin carb had been rebuilt.
 
The original motor was no good so he gave me this spare motor.

I will tag him in the final build thread. Honest seller, he lost interest in this and is building a 55.
 
I think you'll be better served to stick with a stock or very close to stock cam profile. The 2f is a low rpm engine....
 
That makes my life a little easier but while it’s out I’m figuring I should hit everything at once. This one will get a 5speed/desmog and since my 85 is a pretty prestine survivor figured I should put a little heat on this one... but maybe not.

Maybe a JimC desmog kit and headers only?
 
Delta Cam is the regrinder you seek. Go with their mildest profile, which is still significantly more duration than OEM.

FWIW, it seems silly to swap in a cam with 15% more airflow and a carb with 25% less airflow.
 
Can you tune an Aisin to work with that cam?

I understand the mentality of staying stock on the cam but want to do all this while the motor is out.

Probably won’t get a chance to do another in-depth restoration for awhile.

I have the delta KC 289, which is 262* duration advertised; aka, LUMPY. while it does open the top alot, it comes at the cost of low rpm smoothness. I would love to see what a milder cam can do. that said, I have become quite used to it now, and it is a bit of a monster.

it lives in a .020" overbored 2F with flat top pistons, decked for flatness only. it has a head that got some work. I told the machinist to use 1.50" exhaust and 1.84" intake SS SBC valves, and necessary (stock 305) hardware. He is from the school of MIBs, so naturally, instead of saving us both some time by simply grinding the seats a tab larger, and reaming the guides to fit the fatter stemmed, fatter faced SBC valve, he drilled out the guides and pressed in new ones, and ground the superior toyota exhaust seats out to press in new aftermarket stellite seats, so he could fit -what I am lead to believe- 1.62 and 1.84" valves, thus exacerbating the low RPM lope and lack of manners. thing sounds sorta like a diesel. I am still dialing in the Aisin carb, but it runs soooo good when its on...if anything, seems like it wants a leaner set of slow jets, and a pinhole in the throttle plate.

do what JimC says, get the mildest non stock grind, a set of lifters, and if the valves, guides, or seats need work, consider the 1.50/1.84 SS SBC valve and hardware combo- just don't let your machinist do his own thing...
 
Stock springs are fine with the mild grind. The lift is not increased much. It's the duration that gets stretched out, since the stock duration is laughably tight.

Send the lifters to Delta to be refaced, along with the cam regrind. Surprisingly inexpensive.

The carb & dissy will work with the cam. The more important thing is getting the desmog done correctly, all manifold leaks sealed up, etc.
 
I have a spare 87 carb I can send out, I think I will put the existing rebuilt unit on my 85 to save down time. Heck I have a complete spare locked motor I can get parts off of.

Should I get AirTube plugs from Manafre?
 
Jim, the shop restoring this cruiser will be reaching out to you. Gonna find my spare 87 carb tonight. They will work with you on making sure you have the tuning info and vice versa about the regrind. Misc parts and the dizzy.

If I have the time and ability I may wheel dyno my bone stock 85 with 195k on it (although maybe less because it was pulled behind a motor home by the original owner) and this 87 when done. The 85 has around 140’s-150’s compression across the board. The 87 is about 200’ ft above sea level and the 85 was about 60’ above sea level when tested. 87 170’s-180’s compression, not much history as the motor came out of a parts truck.

Need to figure out where to get the H55 from now that won’t kill me on shipping. Gonna knock that out next week.
