I'm putting power steering on my '72 FJ40 and have acquired a "2F" air cleaner setup in place of my "F" can-style air cleaner to clear the saginaw pump. I have a '75 valve cover on my '72 "F" engine so the air cleaner will bolt right up to that.

Has anyone done something like this? I'm sure the air cleaner housing will not reach down to the "F" carb throat and I"ll have to make a tube to take up the space. No biggie. My questions is how do I put a threaded rod in the "F" carb to clamp down the air cleaner housing there?

Any suggestions will be appreciated as I step into this uncharted territory...

Jody.

I don't think it will work on an older carb, I have been wrong before however. I just cut the braket on my "F" cleaner and added on to it to move it back and out a little. I kinda like the older cleaner better myself. Good luck

Air Cleaner

Hi, The only way I know how to adapt the 2f cleaner is to find a 2f carb air horn,(the top of the carb), and a spacer. HTH Earl

I have done this on my '74. You will need to run a 2F intake, and also make a little adapter for the top of the carb. You are right in your assumption that the pre '75 carb is shorter, but to line up with the 2F aircleaner, you will need the 2F intake because the carb will not sit out far enough. In other words it doesn't line up in two directions.
I made my adapter with a piece of 3"OD exhaust tubing and had the muffler guy swell one end of it to an inside diameter of 3". I welded a brace on the inside of the adapter and welded a stud to it. It looks good, works well and was about a 1 bananna job. I'll try to attach a picture.

Wrong pic, sorry. Try again

Hey Ed, that looks like a lot of work for a lazy man! How how does the adapter seal to the air cleaner. Factory would have called for a rubber donut that spread under compression.

Classic cruisers ps kit calls for an early air cleaner relocation bracket that rotates the canister as it moves back from the forward cylinder head bolt.

While I am not fond of pulling head bolts because of head gasket issues, I also like keeping the access to the valves as easy as possible.

Mark, where the adapter fits the 2F aircleaner I used the rubber gasket from my old F cleaner. The bottom part of the "adapter" I just sawed four places about 1/2" deep and then used a hose clamp and put the gorilla on it. For the stud I just cut a 3/4" strip of 12ga metal and bent some ears on the ends, in opposite directions, welded the same metric bolt as the other wing-nutted studs in the middle of it, squared the top like the others and welded it to the strip. Kinda press fitted the thing in place and pulled it back off and welded it.
I did NOT weld it in place on top of the carb! The leads on my welder were too short. Heh.
I did do a lot of trial fitting and a little work with the diegrinder to make it fit snug to the airhorn. There is a cast lug or stop on the old carbs so you know when it is seated and where you are.
IMHO, If you desmog a 2F, you are better off running a 70-74 carb, rather than making the "on-off" choices you will need to do with a '75> carb that is internally smog controlled by the VSV. I think that is the right term, but have never really dealt with them.
Kinda proud of my lazy man engineering.
Ed
