Im trying to guage everyones interest in a 255/100/16 MT tire?

This will be an 8 ply- DOT rated Michelin XZL type tread/tire.

Should measure to a true skinny 36.0" and fit up to 2.5" lift with no rubbing issues and little trimming and have a fairly similarly light steering feel as other skinny tires.

These will not be retreads and should wear similar to other big brand MTs without the "out of round" qualities of an Interco.

this is just a "feeler" thread to guage interest.

obviously price is a big factor for most people- so for hypothetical reason to guage interest lets say $200-$250each is a range. (which should be fairly competitive given the cost of 35s and 37s these days.)

I was going to reply in the 40 thread, but it makes more sense here. I wouldn't buy it. A 36" tire with a 2.5" lift is going to rub on compression. Being a one of a kind special fit size gives no options for replacement while traveling. I have 255/85s and 35/12.5s, 37/12.5s and at some point having width with height seems better for traction or floatation.

I also have had 255/85s 35s and 37/12.5s and the reason im interested is that the 255s were my favorite of the bunch and i always wished i could find the added height of 35s or 37s in that 255 width. xzls in that size are unobtanium (almost) but the last set i saw on ebay went for $1800:eek:

good question? fairly competitive only works if you've got a name to back it up. i would not pay those prices for a tire manufactured by a no name company. the tires in the 200-250 range have a history behind them, both of professional tire manufacturing and of performance and estimated miles the tires will last.

would suck to drop 250/tire on something that only lasts 10k miles and doesn't work off road.

Also if you are only going to order lets say 500 tires. If the company is not already set up to make that size the set up price will be a friggin lot more then what you will sell them for.

...interested in learning more. Would love to see them mounted on a 100 to get a better sense for clearance issues, etc.

In general, I'm a big fan of tall and thin tires...

Tall and skinny is nice, but I really doubt there will be no clearance issues without a body lift. 1" at a minimum to avoid inner fender contact at compression.

Interested....are they okay to air down to 12lbs or so....?

I would be interested in newly-minted genuine Michelin 255/100R16 as long as Michelin would continue to supply newly-minted replacements to the States. My understanding is that the greatest numbers of these have been shipped primarily to the NATO war effort in Afghanistan.

I would not buy a branded-tire that cannot be replaced by the same brand down the line, nor would I buy a knock-off, factory-seconds, or old-dated units.

these would probably be tested first to see if they:

-have good wear characteristics (40k plus)
- good balance (for a big tire)
-its basically an xzl tread- so really more of an all around beefy 8ply MT tread that falls on the less aggressive side of the mt spectrum.

according to a few people in the tire biz....this tire has alot less out of the box manufacturing issues than the big brand tire makers.

personally id probably steer clear if they had sub 30k wear characteristics or "out of round" issues like an Interco.

Ive been running some 38.7 xmls and like them alot- i just would like a true 36" skinny for gearing/ tuck/ clearance and light steering feel of the 255 width without the Interco manufacturing tolerances.

the last set of michelins that popped on ebay was driven up to $1800+ by the Rover crowd...........so i consider the Michelin 255/100s unobtainable.

yup spot on-- plan wouldnt be to make money but insure that theres a constant supply at a reasonable price for anyone interested going forward.

id be stoked to sell all my spacers- sell off the less backspaced rims and run some good ol stockers with taller tires that dont break the bank and dont rub the inner fenders on my 40 or dont require me to break out the sawzall on the stock 80 ive got to go larger than 35.

I would definitely be interested in a set (5) of these for my SOA FJ45 project. What sort of timeline are we looking at?

Steve
