OK heres a thinker,

I just pulled out a stock hj60 radio (entire truck is 24V) and it said 12v on the back of the radio,
and has the same part number as my stock radio from my fj60!
Then I put a meter on the wires and it gets 24.4V!
WTF?
do radios have converters in them?

then get this, I put a Pioneer CD player (12v) straight to the 24V and it works!!!

Still havenet wired the yellow constant to save presets, but thats for another day.

Anyway i'll let you know how long it last on 24V!

what are you doing with the old stock radio?? I am looking to buy one..

The Cdn spec HJ60's have a stock 24V to 12V converter hidden in a front fender (left side I think). Good that yours still works!

The jap spec HJ61's do not.

when the smoke comes out of the box you know its fried with the 24v.

it will work for a little bit. but if you really have 24v on the wire it will fry.

run a converter to get the life out of the cd player. just my 2 cents.

The CD player is getting a full 24 volts so I dont think that the converter is working, or even hooked up. The stock radio is 19 yrs old and still works fine after who knows how many yrs of running on 24volts.
we are gona see how long it last.
How much is a cheap converter?

My bad...that's what I get for reading 1/2 a post! I guess you only have to turn the volumn up a little for it to be loud!

That is interesting. This confirms a suspicion that I had that the stock voltage converter did originally go to the radio and cig lighter. I have not rung mine out to see if that is true yet.

I would also caution you against not using one with a modern CD player as well. Remember that if your car isnt running the radio is seeing 24 volts but while running the alternator will be charging the system, and your radio will be seeing over 28v.

The Solar Converter 24-12v is a nice unit and there is much published on here by Greg and Stone and others. I would recommend it as I just did the conversion myself. There are some others on ebay for less if you are on a budget.

What I really wanna do now though is ring out the harness on the stock 24v converter to see if it indeed went to the stock radio and or cig lighter. This would be a very cool way to put the solar converter in, if you just had to swap those wires over and not run all the stuff into the cab...

More times then not I have seen the stock ones no longer working. For sure it goes to the radio. Not sure about the cig lighter. There are enought Cdn HJ60's here that someone will likley know.

if I had my wiring diagrams handy I could solve the puzzle.

I think converters are fine, but has anyone ever found 24v stereo systems. I thought there must be 24v ones in Big rigs and tractors. ?????? I did a search on google and did not find anything jumping out at me.

I did a search and found a 24v Blaupunkt unit one time, but I can't remember where. 12V units are sold everywhere and service and support are widely available. I think that getting a 24v unit will in the end further complicate, not simply things.
