It took a full day but my curiosity finally got the best of me. What the heck is a "H4" light and why is it better?
......1978HJ45

H4
Is the type of fitting the globe has
Ie 7x series use a h4 bulb with hi beam and low beam in the one globe
80 series run a h1 bulb for high beam and h3 bulb for low beam or vice versa

Cost, low to high... Trucklite, Bosch, Hella, IPF
Quality, low to high, Bosch, Trucklite, Hella, IPF
Best Value, Tie between IPF and Trucklite.

The Germans lose in lowenbrau's book.

Not to start a debate, but I've run Hella and IPF, but greatly prefer Bosch H4 headlights. Over my past 50 years of driving, Bosch has proven the best for my applications in motorcycles, cars, trucks, and Land Cruisers.

Once the H4 globes get sprayed by cold water they have a tendancy too CRACK. I am on my 4 set of H4 globes . Still had the original H4 Bulbs though. Now I am running 12V HIDs inside my H4 globes and they are bright. I mean BRIGHT !

I had the HiDs but one wouldn't turn on all the time after a couple of months , i had to take them out for lic inspection and a lot of people would flash me as if my high beams were on so I bailed them and leave them for the spotties, as the cruisers headlights are close together already to on coming traffic they seem bright in STD globe form ,HiDs made it 10 times worse , but as far as being the driver with HiDs the light spread etc was great specially in the bush

1978hj45 you got the IPF H4's, unless someone messed with them after me.

Prado T interesting that you had issues with cracking housings when sprayed with cold water, cause I have headlight washers on my BJ74 with IPF H4 headlights and have not broke one yet driving it year round for over 2 years now

Hi BJ71.......sent you a P.M.

The reason I'm running Trucklites now is because I broke my IPFs when I submerged them with over watt bulbs in them and they cracked. Same happened another time with one of the German manufacturers and a sudden rainstorm. I think the problem is limited to running high watt ( ie over 120W) bulbs and then suddenly soaking the housings.

piss on oncoming traffic. i switched everything to hid and re-aimed everything a tad lower. and when grumpy-ass buttmunch flashes me, they get the hi-beams on both the headlamps and auxiliaries. it lights up the entire interior of their car like the sun, and i can see them putting their hand up in front of their face.

"grumpy-ass buttmunch flashes me,"
hey, i resemble that remark.
but
up here, cops just LOVE guys that do that. 'dangerous driving' and 'stunting' charges are a bugger. it can lead to immediate roadside seizure of the vehicle and a hell of a fine.

I guess as long as it isn't a unmarked cop car your lighting up

When I would pull up behind cars at traffic lights at night time, you would always see the hand go up to adjust the review mirror

Remember that grumpy-ass butt munch will go to the town hall meetings and get you kicked out of you favorite trail, way to give wheelers a good reputation.

I see the need maybe to upgrade a bit as newer cars seem to come with brighter lights than they did in the 80's, but some people go way to far.

i can count on one hand how many times i get flashed in the space of six months (has yet to be a cop). it's all aimed properly, and isn't overkill wattage. if you are constantly being flashed, likely it's your gear not aimed right moreso than the actual "brightness" of your lamps (like the skippy dickheads who put a 4" lift on and are too stupid to understand why everyone flashes them and their hi-beams point to the sky). secondly, it's not a "wheeling rig", and let me know if you can even find a "favourite trail" anywhere in MD that i can get everyone kicked off of... so why not save the sanctimonious bs for someone else.

wayne, sounds like you got some bored-ass cops up there. maybe you could use some daily shootings like we got down here to keep them busy earning their pay... :)

I would get the occassional flash with the STD sealed beams , but nothing like the hids
I used the 35w instead of the common 55w ones ,

To run the hids legally here the have to be installed and aligned by people licensed to do so like auto sparkies and the have to have squirter washes for the head lights as well ,

I don't think I know any skippy dick heads with 4" lifts in there 7x series that are licensed for the road, I'm sure if you raised the front 4" and left the back height std you might need to adjust them down unless your a spotting koalas in the trees on the side of the road.

How did you set up your 12v from your 24v supply? I'd love to know and do the same upgrade.

I also had my first hella globe crack. Driving in a snow storm where the temperature was close to freezing so the snow was wet. It packed itself arond the globes. I had to stop and keep clearing them but one cracked. I have stone guards and this is the first time I've had a problem These globes I've had from my first car 22 years ago.

oh, we got tons of them here. usually an f250 powersmoke with the 5" exhaust stacks, mud bogger tires, multiple shock setup, diesel fuel turned up way too high, and will never leave the pavement.

I have the Hella H4s and run the 55/60W 24V H4 bulb. Not high wattage compared to others. And they crack if you look at them sideways, LOL My BJ 74 had the headlights wired up to be on all the time, so it snows, they crack. Travelling around the province off- roading put the 74 in the creek , they crack. Hmmmm.
The HJ 61 has Hellas low and Bosch high running stock wattages , they have not cracked yet

As for the HIDS they need a constant , steady voltage, they dont like fluctuations. I only turn them on when the charging system is working. ( Most of you 24V 70 guys/ gals will know that within the first minute or less the electrical system is not charging during initial start-up. I only turn on the HIDS when the charge (volt) guage is in the operating position. This will make the ballast , starter(igniter) and the bulb last much longer. If I dont wait and turn them on as soon as I start up one HID will always go out and then turn them back on so both are on and Bright.
The HIDS run way cooler so I dont think I will be cracking any more lenses in the near future.

Gofast , Hi

I run the 12V lights on my Surepower 20A 24V-12V converter with plenty of power to spare. The HIDS are 35W

Maybe you guys that get the snow or really cold temps should run the sealed lights
