Anyone run 235/85/R16s on their 3rd gen 4runners?

I've read that the spare with these will fit up into place nicely...this true?

What about handling and ride...I am looking at E rated tires to try and avoid being too soft, and thicker sidewalls.

Not important to me, but some feel that they would look too thin on a 3rd gen...any opinions?

I am hoping to gain a little height (these are almost 32"), with no lift, and I do not want the extra weight and drag of a wider 265/75/R16. Eventually, I think this '96 would get '99 springs...that is if the deal I am working on with the seller of the '96 holds up...we'll see.

Couldn't find any decent pics of a 3rd gen with some on. This would be for a '96 2.5 manual.

Thanks for the link...I love the way those tires look...and they will look better on an SR5 vs the Limited :)

well here you go..my 96 2.7Litre on a set of Michelin LTX M/S 235/85R16's E range 10 ply
Not a big lug tire but I sure liked them for offroading through the firm stuff like rocks and creeks. They worked really well in the snow as well.

I had included a pic at the bottom..LT245/75R16's KM2's ..i wanted at factory height..about 31 inch and not as wide as a factory 265/70R16
I live 3 hours highway drive from the mountains so i wanted to be able to drive70 mph still with the 2.7 Litre. These seem to take about the same hp to turn as the taller but pretty smooth tread of the Michelins.

Thanks Duane...looks like these are on my short list if everything works out :)

Edit: Are those stock '96 springs...no lift?

Here's one - I'm sure there are others on the ExPo forum.

CYi5's '99 4Runner Buildup - Page 6

That looks good. I have a'98 with a stock 250K mile suspension and 265 Goodyear Duratracs on FJC 17"s. I get rub just hitting dips in the road and would never venture off a fire road without a lift.

I run 235/85R16 BFG ATs on my truck. They ROCK.

Perfect size in my opinion, traction has been flawless and I still average 23mpg.

I had them on my Double Cab Tacoma. BFG KO's. The ride was about the same as Load Range D tires. They were cheaper (I paid about $200 less). But they did not lessen the MPG hit (I was getting the same MPG as 265/75/16), and they were a little less stable on off-camber turns (off road) and high speed on-road turns.

IMO, if you can spend the extra dough on 265/75/16's, that's what I'd do. But 235/85's aren't that bad, either.

I like this skinny look!

Interesting that a change in stability was noticed with the 235/85s.

Oh, my tires are Load Range E.

The ride is almost exactly like my stock tires but with noticeably more 'grippyness.' Love it.

there are definitely times in soft or deep where a skinny tall tire is a good thing compared to a wide tire.
A wide tire on hard packed or the pavement always looks better to me :D
One thing that sort of drove me nuts on my 235/85 Michelins was the tread pattern was a bit tighter that an 265 to where the smaller gravel common on back roads would always stick in the tread.... I was forever hearing that tick tick tick down the asphalt or worse..chucking rocks for miles down the highway.

I certainly noticed a smoother ride quality when I put a P265/70R16 back on... so that's where I am now and have the KM2's on a spare set of steel rims for when we head off the roads. Man is a steely with the KM2 a heavy combo compared to an alloy with a Michelin LTX on it
