Hi All, my friend had a 91 runner with a 22re.

On cold start up he gets a really high cold idle, around 1500-1600 rpm. Too high. When it gets warm it drops to about 1000

I read on the internet a bit about it, but am confused a bit. I read there is an aux air valve that controls the cold idle, by blocking air??

is this adjustable? or does he have to buy a new valve?

Anyone have this problem?

thanks, BB

Honestly that is not that high for a cold idle. But yes there is an idle air control valve on the throttle body that opens or closes slightly depending on the temp of the coolant. I have a carb on my 22r so I cant go look to tell you where the adjuster is but there should be a screw on the throttle body to adjust the idle. Look for two small coolant hoses that run to the throttle body and look in that general area.

Hollar at me if you need help still.

It is called the "idle air valve" and it is located underneath the intake. It uses the coolant temp to adjust the air needed for idle up. Usally the problem is that in hot areas they do not idle up enough. They are adjustable but new ones are NOT available from Toyota. I would recommend taking a few from a junk yard so you can see how it works becuase no matter how much you read it's best to have it in your hands. Then adjust one and switch them out till you get the cold idle to your likeing.

I agree. That is not that high. My 22re idles cold at that BUT it drops to 750 when warm.

On of the easiest ways to help idle is to clean your throttle body with carb cleaner AND and long handled brush (kind of like a tooth brush but found at Harbor Freight with a wooden handle). Clean it until there is 0 tarnish off that brush AND make sure the throttle butterfly is closing all the way AND that it does not stick. Do this and see what happens to the idle. It should take no longer than one hour.

Spray the carb cleaner in a small bowl and dip the brush in the solution. Do not spray into the T body. The solution will get VERY dirty so dump it every 10-15 brush dips.

My old 1991 idled that high when I drove it off of the stealers lot, but then would drop to 750 when hot and 1000 when the AC kicked on.
