I would like to know if you can take a 1986 22re and put it in a 1990. Could I put the head from a 1990 on a 1983 block.

1 - sort of
2 - sort of.

You can do whatever you want, but neither are plug-n-play.

For #1, you'll want to use the 90's intake, as it's is better, and you will have to use the '90's fuel injectors, as they are different than the 86's. Everything else is bolt on.

I suppose you could pot the 90 head on the '83, as they really are identical. But the cams are very different. Also, I would not try to turn an '83 R series into an RE. The '85+ Laser blocks are stronger, are 2mm shorter, and you won't have to worry about getting the right timing chain...

Guess the different cams are just an urban legend, eh?

The previous owner of my truck had a junkyard engine installed using the '86 head. It would ping on hot days under acceleration, even with the timing at spec. I took it to a shop and after much hair pulling and replacing egr valve, etc, they did some research and claimed the block was out of a non-EFI '85 or earlier engine and the casting for the egr port on the block is a different diameter. Based on BKG's comment the extra 2mm of deck height would lower the comp. ratio and reduce the tendency to pre-detonate, who knows.....

For some reason it doesn't do it as much and I just lived with it. I back off the throttle if I hear it ping.
