You guys are so practical, but you're probably right. Twin stick would be a lot cooler though.

I've got low and high range with 2 or 4 wheel drive and I replaced the starter that was getting a bit tired! I'm headed to Texas on Monday, but I'll be back in time for this. Really looking forward to it!

I updated the first post of this thread with all the info. Here's the shortened version:

just after the frontier guys got past us it sounds like their fun began. one guy popped a bead off while at the same time that new bronco got messed up and was starting to slide off the edge. took some winch work to get him back on the trail. another great 40's only run, for the guys that didn't come along, ha ha, you missed a great run.
still haven't figured out why my hood won't open. i'm thinking the theory about the bolt holding the rubber bumper somehow getting hooked on the hood is most likely. tomorrow's project, will have to take off the hinge and hopefully that will do it. this is another dandy, gotta love the old steel

About got swallowed up in that hole. Tree didn't help either. :D

it's a shame pics or videos don't show the true angles. this was a good one with the tree added for good measure. i have to admit that i locked the front end to get thru that mess. on a side note jon bj74 stopped by and he also was impressed with the hood lock. it was as expected as the nut had came off the bolt holding the rubber hood rest and somehow got on top of the edge of the hood. not like we were flexing or anything

After that trip lockers have moved to the top of the list of upgrades.

Glad you got your hood open. That was pretty crazy.

Great photos! I've got several hours of video I've been editing.

Lockers, a rear bench with seat belts, and a winch are on my wish list. I want to be able to idle through everything with my wife in the passenger seat like Ron, and I want to bring my kid along on my adventures and be able to winch out of trouble with zero drama like Matt.

I had such a good time on this trip. It's always fun to see the old trucks on the trail, but this trip was really great. There was enough technical stuff to feel challenging, but I didn't feel over my head. We had sun, rain, sleet, snow, wind, dust, mud, rocks, logs, wild flowers, epic views, and not a single mosquito.

If you missed it this year, you missed a heck of an adventure. Do yourself a favor and block out the June weekends for 2025.

Here's my video of the trip:

Great video @90WT , you have awesome co-driver The Prospector

“here goes nothing Silas I’m trying my best!”
“Well I think I’m in a pickle” (“are you leaning into that tree?”)

A lot of snow banks too!

Well done Y’all!

That was a fun video to watch. I wonder how long it will be after the Prospector takes over driving the 40 that you decide you need one of your own? :)

It's really interesting for me to see the different lines that each driver chooses. My truck has 31" tires, open diffs, and a driver with a fraction of the experience of the other drivers on this trip. @90WT has 33" tires and open diffs. @elkun1 has 35" tires (I think. Maybe they're 33"?) and two lockers. I was having to be pretty careful to keep from catching the axles on rocks and having to use momentum quite a bit. Ron was able to crawl up and over stuff that I either avoided or "bumped" to get over and he was able to drive out of some of the ditches that I just had to follow. I need a few more mods and a lot more windshield time.

worn 33's. when buying tires always go to the mfg site and see what the actual diameter is. just because they call a tire something doesn't mean it's anywhere near that size. the only time i used the front locker was when i had to go thru that souphole that matt kindly enlarged for me. it grabbed enough that i didn't have to go into the bowels of that hole. when engaged steering is pretty much hold on for the ride unless you have hydraulic steering that will overpower it. i hate to admit that sam was right but i do think the shackle reversal was a plus. besides smoothing out the pot holes on the ho chi minh trail that matt took us on out of boulder i honestly think it gave me more control when on the trail. my back still hurt that night though lol.

also Seth, i feel like your main problem is the carb. you have to concentrate so much to keep it running when on a sidehill that it is a major distraction for you. i'm still irritated that i missed getting that injection for you. a couple days earlier and it would have been very economical. we need to see if there's an offroad kit available for that carb. i will look around and see if i still have a carb i took off a 327 that worked wonderfully.
