Hi all,

So I will be installing my winch this coming week and I got to thinking about my battery

My 2018 LC200 just turned 19000 miles.

I did my state inspection the other day and they tested the battery, my Battery is rated for 710 CCA but tested at 637 and in my winch manual it states I should have 650 CCA

1. So am I close enough ? seeing how it will be used once or twice a year at most ?

2. If I should replace it, what should I replace it with ?

3. And what if any sort of gremlins should I expect when replacing if I do

Thank you again for your input again

Greg

Personally i use an odyssey optima extreme, but thats because I use it for a fridge and other stuff like lights.

I wouldn't change just because I tested just under the recommended cca. Who knows how they tested it and whatnot. Leave the cruiser running, and don't run the winch too long without giving it a break and you should be fine.

I'm just throwing stuff out here as I have never owned or used a winch.

CCA is defined as the number of amps the battery can produce at zero deg C for 30 seconds while maintaining at least 7.2V. It seems running the engine at a higher RPM (2000?) while winching would supplement a deficit in battery capacity and boost voltage to keep it above 7.2V

Get a good battery charger (I use the ODYSSEY OBC-20A) and charge the battery the night before you hit the trail to ensure it's operating at 100%. I also check the health of my batteries at home using something the ANCEL BA101 from Amazon to ensure all is good about once per month and hit with the charger as needed. I used to quickly replace my stock battery with a group 31 AGM, but I like many others had multiple battery failures for various reasons you will find with a search which I got tired of. Good battery health (making sure whatever you have is maintained and fully charged) is far more important than having a fancy and expensive battery that isn't really designed to work well with a daily driver. The reality is for most people, including myself, using the winch is a very rare occurrence, so just ensure all is good before you head out on a trip and don't worry about it.

Your advice will be taken whole heartedly and makes complete sense. I do have a few good battery chargers and actually charged it today, it only took an hour or less, i checked it at an hour and it was 99% when I began the charge I was at 12.98 at end it was 13.96, I then checked the distilled water and all is good

Thank you much for your input
