Hi all,

2018 marked the year for me to buy a new Land Cruiser (have an 80 that I'm about to overland build) and it was tougher than I expected it would be to grab one. Wanting one in magnetic gray w/ the terra interior, I thought it would be simple enough to find one somewhere here in the States, preferably TX. However, talking with the local Toyota dealership, that color combo is "rare" and that there were NONE for the taking at the present time (granted, I was looking for brand new one with 0'ish miles). He went on to say that only 21 of the magnetic gray's with terra were sold in 2017...I guess that is pretty rare if true!

Nonetheless, I ordered one and it will take about 12 wks for it to arrive...I'm super excited and will post pics once it shows up. The plan is a "mild" build with slightly larger and more aggressive tires...vehicle will serve double duty as both a daily driver and a family hauler to the mountains, camping, etc.

Congrats, the wait is the hardest part!. There was one Gray/Terra locally that I really liked back in Nov when I ordered mine. Wife wanted a light color and I couldn't find White/Terra anywhere. Mine took about 12 weeks to come in, including about a week in port.

I think what your dealer meant was there were no grey/terra ‘18s they were willing to get for you. A quick cars.com search turned 3 within a couple hundred miles of me and shipping is not that expensive. The upside of waiting is you get to plan all the cool things you’ll do to/with it this summer! Fun coming up :bounce:

Congrats. I wanted classic silver on terra and had to do the same. Seems most are shipped black on black around my neck of the woods.

The best things are worth waiting for.

Like above, dealers only talk about cars that are available within their network that they trade vehicles in. This way they don't lose your business or lose money when dealing with another store they don't have a trade relationship with.
I'd call one of those other dealers and have them match a price.

I have that color combo and like it. Once I get these stupid screens out of my truck, it will be like yours.

I am driving 4 hours tomorrow to get my Silver on Black 2018.

My local dealer here in KS is in a different region then the one I bought in AR, and the only one in my spec in their KS dealer region was about 12 hours away, one way all the way out in Colorado.

I made about a $1500.00 better deal on the one in AR. Then I could make locally on the one they located in CO.

I suspect in your case there were not any Grey on Terra interior in the Texas dealers assigned region.

It is my understanding that dealers can't dealer trade vehicles with dealers outside their region. I think they can buy inventory off other dealers outside their regions but that adds quite a bit of cost doing that.

I hate to say it, but I do believe 12 weeks to be a pretty optimistic lead time for a vehicle built in Japan.
12 weeks is more the time frame to expect on US built vehicles. I wonder if your sales person knew that all Land Cruisers were built in Japan when he told you 12 weeks. I am very interested in how this turns out. If it shows up inside of 12 weeks I will be very impressed.

Mine took about 12 weeks from order to delivery. My understanding is they pipeline 'em -- the truck the OP is getting was already scheduled to be built, it was assigned to his dealer when the order was accepted by the region.

That would make since if they have one already in the pipeline they could alter the spec on, I could see that helping speed things up a bit.
If there was one already in route I think there is a way for dealers to snag one that way too.
My Tundra I bought last year there was one already built in route to another dealer in the same region, they were able to get it for me, still took about 3-4 weeks.

I ordered at grey/terra '18 Aug. 9, '17. It was due to arrive October but was damaged in port so I didnt get it til nov 9. It was $79,182 incl TT&L using the Costco buying program.

The salesman checked the production schedule for the next grey/terra that another dealer had not already reserved. Loading the boat, crossing the ocean, port plus customs was 2 weeks plus more time from the port to the dealer. Call it 3 weeks from when it rolls off the line.

If you are hearing 3 months, its probably because 1) that is the first one not spoken for; 2) the dealer can't/won't trade for one on the floor somewhere in the US.

Whatever the wait, its worth it.

For a few hundred bucks I had Mr T add remote start and all weather mats in the port. Then I had the dealer put in the front strut spacers a/k/a the "leveling kit" and align it. You might get the dealer to charge just parts on that, since they have to check the alignment before they turn it over to you.

Awesome feedback and discussion guys, much appreciated!

YES, the wait is definitely going to be worth it...getting the garage organized and ready is so much better this way. Thinking more about the discussion with the salesman, it seems there was more emphasis on "looking" in the South/Southeast areas, ie, units were found in TX, LA, and FL. However, as some mentioned, a "trade" or "deal" couldn't be made between the dealerships so I just said to order one and be done with it. Nothing was said to have been found anywhere else in the States but it sounds like they may not have checked.

With that said, you all piqued my interest in having some things "added" while in transit or at least before I pick it up.

Remote start...does this not come factory anyway? I never thought to ask, just assumed it did but will ask nonetheless.

Better tires installed...anything has to be better than the factory tires from what I've read. Since I'm considering a modest lift and new rims/tires in the near future, it may be a moot point but I have a few weeks to noodle on that. ;)

Any other things to ask for upon delivery?

At the time of purchase I was offered some 3rd party warranties and got the scratch and dent one, the uphostery one and the lost key one. They might be sucker's bets, but with kids I figured I'd have at least a shot at recouping the cost. I will be buying Mr. T's VSA extended warranty from Jennifer in Colorado since her prices a great and my Local dealer claimed they can't sell it to me because they carry the 3rd party warranty products.

Remote start is not included and adds about $500. There is little doubt that other car makers do a better job with it but it does work. With kids, its nice to get into a warm or cool car.

With the Costco buying progam after you complete the purchase you get a coupon for 50% off parts/service up to $200 in savings. So, I got the "levelling kit," 5 pin connector, removable tablet holder, trailer ball, receiver lock pin, and a few more goodies, like windsheild shade, trash can...

With a new car I don't know if they'll upgrade your tires without charging you. If you decide to keep your Dumb-Lops, you can get a road hazzard warranty from Discount Tire for about $125. You don't get one from the dealer and if you destroy just one they're pricey to replace at abput $275 each.

EDITED:

The very first thing I did after taking delivery was get the windows tinted. In the southwest that is critical. If I lived up north or near a coast I would have gotten it undercoated with fluid film or had the dealer undercoat it. I also sprayed the kdss valve with a marine grade waxy grease whose name escapes me (LPS 3, Amazon $10), to prevent rusting.

The "factory" accessories are installed at the port. I ordered remote start, all-weather mats, paint protection film and wheel locks when I placed my order and all of those are itemized on my window sticker. I could have done without any of them.

The remote start range is not great and it's slow to respond to the required pres, press, hold. The engine shuts off when you open the door as a security measure even though the car is locked. You won't want to use it in your garage at any rate.

The mats are ok but I would have preferred Weathertechs.

Jury is out on the paint film. I'll have to see how it holds up.

My dealer was very low-key at closing as far as additional warranties, etc. He mentioned the factory warranty extension but that was about it.

Who is this Jennifer you speak of and how does one buy a warranty from her?

Ok all, the new Land Cruiser finally made it in and I picked it up today!

Typical Toyota screens don't ship anymore (apparently) but the dealer added this wireless Advent system...

So far...absolutely love it! What a great machine!

Looks way better than my 17 with the screens sticking out 5 inches.

The Dealer told me that Toyota has realized the screen design isn't ergonomic enough and is prone to breaking when flipping the seat so essentially back to the drawing board and why they aren't shipping now. These headrest units are the cats meow and work in tandem or separately depending on what the kids feel like watching (or not).
