VGRS Light comes on in display panel and shows constantly and can’t be removed or over ridden. When this light is on, the following malfuntions happen:
1. Radio / Audio system is silent but the audio / navigation system operations and display work as regular. Just no volume.
2. Garage door / gate control buttons don’t work
3. Back up camera does not work
4. Driver’s seat preset buttons don’t work. Driver’s seat / steering wheel doesn’t return to neutral position
Joe Myers Toyota Service in Houston TX has worked on it and told me the wiring harness (part number 82141-6AB04 Wire, Instrument Panel) has moisture in the connectors in the bottom left corner and said it was due to (or, importantly, SEEMED to be due) a leak from a non-Toyota windshield installed by the prior owner. They replaced the windshield and cleaned the connectors. They said they could not replace the harness because the part was not available. Cleaning the connectors seemed to work for a few weeks but the intermittent problem has returned creating the same malfunctions listed above. I’m thinking the moisture /wetness issue has not been solved. I don’t know what to do next. Looking for ideas.

First off they are full of it saying it was caused by a non Toyota windshield. A genuine toyota windshield will leak exactly the same if it is installed by someone that doesn’t know what they are doing.

That said plenty has been posted about water in the footwells causing problems. It is painstaking but the harness can be opened up and each pin pulled and cleaned, one by one. This takes someone who knows what they are doing.. there are a ton of wires there and all need to be carefully removed from the plug and put back into the right spot. It’s possible some of the connectors corroded to the point of needing replacement but toyota sells parts to do this. Again it comes down to finding someone you trust to do the work.

Thanks for the prompt reply. Do you think its likely a water problem leaking on the harness? If it is, and I think that is likely, how would you recommend identifying and correcting the source problem of a water leak? Unless that's corrected, doing anything else won't matter.

Plus, it looks like the part IS available to buy at ToyotaPartsDeal.com for $2,629.27. Looks like a very complicated re-installation.

Pull your A pillar from the drivers side, get the water hose out and hose the roof around the sunroof and windshield and watch for the waterfall on the A pillar.
My suggestion, if you are not mechanically inclined to fix this issue yourself, dump this terd fast while the market is still high.

It’s easy to pull the door sill trim and look down into the area that would be collecting water and causing the problem. There are a few connectors with many pins each that sit down low and get submerged. If you don’t see visible water, you can look at and into the connectors for a greenish residue that is evidence of corrosion on the pins which are coated with tin.

My point earlier was it’s the windshield install, not the windshield. That does happen. And yes if the root cause isn’t fixed this will just come back.

Some people have a leak at the cowl into the AC fan motor even with a good windshield install but that’s only on the passenger side. And water will be visible where I describe on that side.

Thanks for the suggestion. Makes total sense. And if I can't see the issue, I'll follow your other suggestion...much appreciated
