Hi,

I recently purchased a gx 460 which is having some transmission issues. When the transmission shifts into 5th gear from 6th gear (coasting in 6th on the highway, then hitting the gas causing the transmission to shift to 5th), there is a momentary shudder/vibration that can be felt from the transmission. It sometimes happens when going from 4th to 5th but much less often. Rpm’s will also shift up as expected with the gear change, and then drop about 100-200 RPM after the “shudder” and the transmission fully engages the next gear. There are no lights on the dash. Transmission works normally otherwise (changing from P R N D, accelerating/decelerating in other gears)

Mechanic diagnosed it as a bad shift solenoid (not sure which one). Wondering if anyone has experienced this.
Is this a symptom of a bad solenoid? Can the computer still throw a code for a bad solenoid without warning lights coming on? If the mechanic drops the pan and does not see metal shavings, could it just need a new solenoid and possibly ATF change?

Thanks

How is it with manual shifting? Pulling the lever to the left and rowing through the gears up and down?
Will it hold any gear you put it in (withing a reasonable speed)? Like manually dropping down to 5th at 55 or 60 mph, or 5th to 4th and back up again?

So that was the strange thing, I could not get it to happen in manual.

It happens almost everytime I did the following: Coasting in 6th on the highway, then hitting the gas causing the transmission to shift to 5th. Shudder/vibration on the upshift

The few hundred rpm drop after the down shift from 6th to 5th (or an upshift from 5th to 6th) is the torque converter locking. That's normal.

Have you or the mechanic scanned for codes?
