His phone number is New York but the craigslist ad is Inland empire CA.

They use your email along with phone # for Craigslist identification.
That is great you did that
That same ad with the same pictures was/is listed all across the country on Craig’s list. I have seen it in at least 10 different city listings. I click on prohibited and most of the time the ads get removed.
There is also a bunch of other scam ads that get listed the same way.
I really wish Craig’s list would do a better job of filtering out the scammers.
