Two days ago I found a cheap Hilux axle with diff lock and got the idea to put the third member in my LJ70. I posted in 70 series tech asking about everything that has to be done, but haven't got any answers.

However, I did some googling and some logical thinking (not that Toyota makes the most logical engineering decisions) and my main concern now is if I can put the 4.88 gear and pinion of the 1987 LJ in the 2007 Hilux third member? Some sources claims it's impossible, while others mean it's all the same.

If the Hilux people know more about the 8 axle than the 70 series people, please go check my other post and see if you can enlighten me with anything.

I vaguely remember an issue with "FACTORY' 4.88 Toyota geared axles in specific applications. IDK if it applies here though. I'm posting this just in case.
Erik's Toyota Differential info
The FACTORY 4.88 V6 diff is unique!
- Axle code G144, white pinion paint code,
- generally came in 92-95 trucks/4runners with V6, auto tranny, 31" tires, and tow package.
- Housing offsets pinion towards ring gear, allowing ring gear to be thinner
- OEM Toyota gears are the ONLY gears that fit this diff due to the thinner ring gear. All other gear sets have thicker ring gears and do not fit.
- The carrier (case) is the same as the V6 diffs, so normal V6 lockers, LSD's, etc. will work in this diff

Your link doesn't work for me, does the site say anything important other than what you quoted?

Does this mean that it won't work if my current axle is a g144, but all other 8" axles works?
Edit: VIN plate says g145 for the rear axle.

the factory 4.88 uses a different housing and gearset vs regular 8"
the ring gear is thinner and the pinion is offset closer to the ring gear vs regular 8"

may or may not be the case with the lc
dig around the internet for some pictures and verify your parts.
sorry, i totally spaced the queer 4.88 thing.

Sorry the link didn't work. I just Googled for info on the Toyota FACTORY 4.88 gears and saw a bunch of threads on various websites like Pirate 4x4, Tacoma and 4Runner forums. I just did a copy and paste from a thread post on one of them. I have zero experience on your application and just thought it was worth mentioning this so you didn't spend money on something you may not be able to use.

Toyodiy.com is showing different parts for the diff sub assembly. i would have to assume that means its 4.88 specific. looks like the other j70s use the standard part
