Hello all,

First time posting here. Hoping to get some advice. I am looking at getting a new to me LC or LX470.
I got a family of 4. We do a good amount of camping and long road trips. Just got back from an 8 state, 3,000 mile trip around the pacific northwest. We are looking for a vehicle that's the "do all" vehicle. It seems to me that the LC is the place to be. So I am looking for recommendations on which years/models to get. We will be doing off roading in it. We will be doing long road and camping trips. We will be doing some towing but nothing to large. It will not be my daily driver, it's gonna be mostly for trips, when we need to move around more then 5 people and throwing bikes on the hitch and in the back.
Recently came across a couple of options.

2008 LC w/120k miles for $30k
2006 LX 470 w/80k miles for $27

A decent amount more miles on the LC but the newer one has a more powerful engine and seems more refined. Still undecided and I am not committed to any year or model. What do you all think?

Thanks in advance

I recommend the newer one. You'll like the bigger motor.

200 series all the way, grab the 2008, it will be perfect for what your talking about doing!

i really really really like the 100 but i would say go with the 200, you won't regret it. The 5.7 alone is enough.

I faced this same dilemma a couple months ago after totaling my 80 series. I knew the 100s well and had driven many but after driving the 200, I went that route and have never looked back. 100s are fantastic, 200s are just that much better. I wouldn't worry about the mileage factor.

200 all day. That 120k isn't even broken in yet.

I have test driven both and would love to own either one. However, I bet if you are patient you can find a 200 with way less miles for only slightly more $. I have almost bought a 2006 lx470 and a 2005 lc, but after test driving a 200, I have to decided to wait, stack up some cash and make it the last car I buy to drive ( my next one after that will be a google car that drives me around, I wonder if they'll make one w/ factory lockers?;))
Unless you just love the looks of the lx470 (which they are a timeless design) go for the 200!

I've been meaning to take a look at the '08 $30k 200 that you're referring to. It's been for sale for a while, which makes me think there's something unappealing about it (unless people don't like the red color).

There's the '09 in Livermore for $38 w/ 77k miles. However it was a midwest vehicle, so the underbody will likely show some corrosion. I'm not sure it's still available though.

$27k for the '06 LX is too high.

Given the price ranges you list, there's no real benefit of choosing the 100 over the 200. You can likely score a nice 100 series for between $15-20k, then it makes more sense to choose the 100 series.

Honestly, for a 200 series LC, I think finding a couple year old one in the $50k range makes the most sense in terms of value. To me, it compares favorably with new similar use vehicles in that price range. That's me saying: I'd rather have a '13/'12 LC if given the choice between it and say '15 QX60, GL450, GX460, Sequoia, Tahoe, etc...

That said, we all have budgets (well, most of us). If the $30k price point is what you want to stick with, take a look at the 200 series and negotiate it down if you're interested in it.

But, the short answer, given your two options above, pick the 200 series. :)

True that. Thanks. I saw that black one. Aren't vehicles sold out there usually coated on the underbody? At any rate, I got time and would prefer some lower miles. I think I'm holding off for the right 200 series. Seen some pics of the redesigned 2016, that may help push the prices of used ones down.

Mainly a lurker here on the 200 forum and may be in the minority. We own both a 06 - 100 series and a 14 - 200. Both bought for different purposes. The 100 series is somewhat built and we use it for occasional trips to Colorado for camping and trails. The 200 is a stock kid hauler and will likely never be offroad other than the 1/2 mile of caliche road to our home. I like them both for our intended purposes. If I were to have a stock Land Cruiser for only on-road overland travel I would without a doubt be in a 200 series. For trails and camping, I like the 100 series. Just my 0.02 right now. Maybe will feel different in a couple of years when the wife wants a new vehicle and I end up with the 200.

I don't think I'd want to take a '14 off road either :)
Another thing I have been looking into is I can get a new 4Runner Trail edition for the price of 200 with 100k miles on it. I know the LC is better in most regards with exception of mpg but is it that much Better???

There are some 4 runner owners in our ACLC group who swear they are phenomenal off road. For me, the 4 runner is just a little too small for a growing family of 4. I like the 2UZ and 5.7 too. They are no doubt very nice and capable, though.

Oh, I'd have no problem taking the 200 off road. I'm just afraid of what my wife would do to me when I got back. She would not be at all happy about that!

Yes! I bought my 2008 3.5 years ago with 94K for 39.5K and have never looked back. I am about to roll over 165K. If it is a well-maintained '08 don't be afraid of the miles. I don't think I'll ever buy anything but a Cruiser from here on.

Test drove a 100 before buying the 200 and couldn't get over the difference in comfort, tech and performance.

I am assuming you have been around both. Close the doors on both...there's a difference. Look underneath...there's a difference. You are buying a heavier, stronger vehicle with the LC. Not saying the 4 runner is bad at all. Just not built as bomber as the LC. But, might not need that....I have both and there' s a noticeable difference. I would say...do you want to go around an obstacle? buy the 4runner...if you want to run it over...buy the LC.

Both are great rigs!

There are a few fairly low priced 200s on cars.com. One recently lower the price to 28k for a 2008, however has 158k miles. There's another one in NY I had my eye on until I got word of me heading to Afghanistan. Hopefully another will popup before I get back.

I remember 10 years ago going through the same decision between a getting an 80 or a newer 100. Really liked the 80 styling and solid axle but after a test drive of the 100, it was an easy decision due to comfort, power (funny to think the 100 had power back then) and overall refinements. Ended up getting the 100, built the crap out of it and loved it for a lot of years. Then did the same between a 100 and 200 when it was time to get something newer 2-1/2 years ago and test drove a 200. Same thing... 200 was just so much nicer and more refined and went that route. I really thought I'd miss the 100 more than I did... 200 is just in another class. That said, the 100 is a phenomenal truck with what I think is timeless styling so reality is you can't go wrong... but I think you might regret getting a 100 when the 200 is out there.
